AB - ABSTRACT: "The teiid lizards Dracaena colombiana, n.sp., and Tupinambis cf. T. teguixin, and an unidentified iguanid lizard occur in the late Miocene La Venta fauna, Colombia, South America. The fossil teiids, found a thousand miles from their nearest modern representatives, indicate a once greater distribution for these genera in northern South America. Their presence corroborates previous interpretation of the La Venta region during the late Miocene as a moist, swampy, lowland floodplain.".

AB - ABSTRACT: The procedure and results of a quantitative analysis of a specimen of native palladium, reportedly from Colombia, are given. The composition is Pd 86.2, Pt 1.6, Rh 3.0, Ir 0.2, Ru 0.2, Os 0.7, Pb 8.1, insoluble 0.5 percent. The relatively large concentration of lead contrasts with native platinum and iridosmine where iron is generally the principal base metal constituent and is associated with a large solid solubility of Pb in Pd but a small solubility in Pt.

AB - ABSTRACT: Outlines the vicissitudes of the anticlinal theory of oil accumulation as a result of differences between the academic approach to the interpretation of factors controlling the accumulation of oil represented by I. C. White of the University of West Virginia, known as the father of the anticlinal theory, and the pragmatic approach, represented by J. P. Lesley of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, an opponent of the theory. The significance of the different approaches is discussed in terms of their application in scientific research in South America, and in Colombia in particular.

AB - ABSTRACT: Evidence indicating periodic late Cretaceous and Tertiary climatic fluctuations has been obtained from palynologic studies of Maestrichtian to lower Miocene deposits of Colombia and is supported by comparable data for the Miocene and Pliocene of northwest Europe. Cold periods, such as that marking the base of the Tertiary, are found to recur at intervals of about six million years; a minor cycle of two million years and the possibility of a 60-million-year cycle are also recognized. The periodicity of climatic variations is probably due to fluctuations in solar radiation.

AB - ABSTRACT: Cites data from palynologic and radiocarbon studies of Pleistocene and Holocene deposits of Colombia and British Guiana which, when compared with similar data from European, North American, and southern South American localities, provide evidence of the synchronism of late and postglacial climatic changes, particularly temperature changes. It is concluded that fluctuations of solar radiation are probably responsible for glacial and interglacial phases and smaller climatic variations.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Cambrian formations of South America occur only in two widely separated localities of the Andes--in the Precordillera of western Argentina and in the eastern ranges of northern Argentina and southern Bolivia. Limestone boulders containing middle Cambrian trilobites have been found in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, but the location of the source beds is not known. Sections exposed in the two areas of outcrop are described.

AB - ABSTRACT: A systematic distribution is presented for material of the Colombian collections of the family Megatheriidae (Edentata, Xenarthra). All the examined remains belong to the genus Eremotherium. A large amount of this material was previously referred to Megatherium. The skeleton from Villavieja is now classed as E. (Eremotherium) rusconii. The subgenus Pseudoeremotherium is represented for the first time in Colombia by two new species, E. (Pseudoeremotherium) robustum from the Pleistocene at Fusagasuga and E. (Pseudoeremotherium) cucutense from the upper Pleistocene at Cucuta. The former is distinguishable by the heaviness of the posterior portion of the skull and by its mandibular morphology, the shape of the lower border particularly giving a striking heaviness to the dentary bone. The latter is a small species with elongated skull, its hind cranial portion broader than higher and a greatly developed union. The humerus has a greatly developed deltoid ridge and the olfactory lobes are of great size.
