AB - ABSTRACT: Describes the field relations, lithology, and microfaunal facies of Senonian pelites and sandstones (the Guadalupe formation) in the Prado river region, Colombia. The sediments were deposited in a lagoonal-marine environment under changing depth conditions. Foraminifera establish their upper Campanian-Maestrichtian (Cretaceous) age. Foraminifera belonging to Siphogenerinoides occur abundantly in calcareous zones within the formation. Examination of the material confirms the validity of the genus and indicates that erection of the genus Siphogenerita for forms with triserial chamber arrangements is not warranted.

AB - ABSTRACT: "Compressional folds and faults of the Sierra de Perijaare strongly aligned in a trend bearing about N. 35 degrees E. Combined in the range with this longitudinal pattern are several local or less prominent trends of faulting and disturbance. South-trending faults branch from the longitudinal faults in the northern part of the range, and emerge into the Maracaibo basin. Crossing through the southern and south-central part of the range is a system of transverse faults related to the Arena Blanca trend defined in the Cesar valley. The east-trending transverse Oca fault system crosses and terminates the north end of the range.".

AB - ABSTRACT: The San Celestino ore body northeast of California in Santander, Colombia, is a brecciated veinlike deposit containing abundant sphalerite, less abundant tetrahedrite, two generations of pyrite, and small quantities of galena, enargite, and covellite, as well as disseminated uranium in the quartz gangue. Paragenetic relationships indicate that mineralization was subvolcanic and took place in several stages. The hydrothermal mineralizing solutions probably represent a late stage of the magmatic activity responsible for formation of the acid porphyry of the area.

AB - ABSTRACT: Paragenetic relationships indicate that the principal zones of copper mineralization of the Perija range, Colombia, are not genetically related to the volcanic rocks associated with red beds of the La Quinta formation (Permian-Jurassic), within which they occur, but were formed as a result of later mineralization probably related to Tertiary magmatic activity of a hidden batholith. Two other types of copper mineralization, of secondary importance, are also present in the range--impregnations in sandstone and fissure veins.

Subsequent orogenic events west of the shield area include the development of the Macarena mountains, which reflect nearby basement age values ranging from 445 to 495 m.y., and the development of a north-south arch in northern Colombia, uplifted and folded in Cretaceous and Tertiary times, agreeing with an age value of 110 m.y.".

AB - ABSTRACT: The crystalline basement of the Guajira peninsula, northern Colombia, comprises rocks formed in two sucessive periods of granite formation--post-tetonic migmatites and ectinites of a single granitized complex, probably Precambrian in age, and granodiorites accompanied by rhodacitic lavas, probably emplaced during a Paleozoic orogenic cycle (Hercynian). Tectonic relationships of the sedimentary cover reflect the effects of vertical movements of the basement. Data on the rock types represented in the basement and the formations represented in the sedimentary cover (Triassic to Miocene) are summarized.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Santa Marta massif in northern Colombia is composed of metamorphic and magmatic rocks, bordered on the southwest by red beds of the La Quinta formation (Triassic-Jurassic) and Cretaceous limestones. Migmatites and ectinites probably represent a continuous series, whereas leptynites are considered the metamorphosed product of an ancient granite emplaced within the migmatites prior to their metamorphism. The magmatic rocks include a variety of granites, interpreted as consanguineous rocks belonging to a single differentiated batholith, and a complex of microgranites, rhyolites, and volcanic ash. A late Hercynian, probably post-tectonic, age is postulated for the batholith. Petrographic details of the various rock types are reported, and the facies and relationships of the rock complexes are discussed.

AB - ABSTRACT: This review covers 25 reporting countries in South America and the Caribbean area. During the review year, geological and geophysical field effort was expended in search of new petroleum reserves in 16 of the 25 countries but this effort totaled only 1298 party-months - down 25% from the preceding year. Wildcat drilling in 1961 increased 7.2% over the 1960 figure. During the year 374 exploratory wells were drilled in 14 of the reporting countries and 87 of these wildcats were completed as oil or gas producers for a success ratio of 30%. Finally, oil production for the year from the subject area totaled 1,318,610,000 bbls., up 4.2% over the preceding year. Some 80970 of this total production came from Venezuela; 8 other countries - all of which have been on a producing basis for many years - provided the remainder. No new countries came on production during 1961. Substantial net acreage relinquishments of concession areas during the year by private companies are reported from Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru.

AB - ABSTRACT: Following an introduction that briefly compares the methods of Niggli and Wolff for classifying igneous rocks and shows the distribution of types into Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, and ultrabasic categories, the Niggli values of 117 analyses of rocks from Colombian localities are presented. Of the total, approximately 40 percent are granitic, 20 percent dioritic, 6 percent syenitic, 11 percent gabbroic, 1 percent foyaitic, 3 percent ultrabasic, and 20 percent migmatitic. No analyses are given.
