AB - ABSTRACT: Formations ranging from Jurassic, exposed in the Cordillera Oriental, to Pliocene crop out successively westward across the concession area. The section is characterized by a major pre-Eocene unconformity. Production is from Oligocene (and lower Miocene) sands associated with a series of anticlinal structures splaying off and diverging northward from the La Salina fault, the principal structural feature of the area. Details of the various members of the section and the principal structures are reported, as well as data on production in the various fields of the concession.

AB - ABSTRACT: In 1942-1943, the Sinu river, Colombia, breached the beach ridge behind which it had previously flowed, forming a delta. A study of aerial photographs taken before and after the catastrophic change of course in the delta region indicates that, in addition to natural conditions, human interference with the natural drainage was also responsible for the breaching.

AB - ABSTRACT: Recent quarrying operations near Curit, Colombia, in the Cretaceous Rosablanca formation, have exposed a zone of extensive fissure and cave development. Fragments of Recent or sub-Recent vertebrate material, mixed with a Cretaceous invertebrate fauna, occur in the fissures. AB - ABSTRACT: This is a study of the Colombian Devonian invertebrate fauna as part of a thesis written at Cornell University. Three classic localities, Floresta (Boyaca), Manaure (Magdalena), and Gutierrez (Cundinamarca), were sampled. A total of 72 species were identified. Of these 30 are new for the Colombian Devonian and 14 are new for South America. Most of the species are brachiopods although a few trilobites, gastropods, and pelecypods also occur. The relationship between Colombian and other South and North American Devonian faunas is discussed.

AB - ABSTRACT: This is a comprehensive report on the Cretaceous and Tertiary stratigraphy of the middle Magdalena valley of Colombia. In the Girardot-Guataqu area the upper Cretaceous is composed of the Hondita formation, Loma Gorda formation, Olini group, and La Tabla formation. These beds are correlated with the Cimarrona formation along the Cordillera Oriental. The Tertiary, clastic nonmarine sediments are more difficult to correlate. In the Jerusalen-Guaduas syncline, the Tertiary sequence from oldest to youngest is the Sica formation, Hoyon formation, San Juan de Ro Seco formation, and Santa Teresa formation. In the middle Magdalena valley the Tertiary sequence is: the Cambras formation, San Antonio formation, Los Limones formation, and the Mesa formation. Many of the formational names used are introduced for the first time and supplant older, well known terms. The Quaternary is represented by a series of alluvial cones which issue from the Cordillera Central to the west; some extend to the Magdalena river. The structure of the valley is briefly considered.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Occidental in the Caldas-Antioquia region of central Colombia are formed of Mesozoic (pre-Albian) parametamorphic rocks and ophiolites, Aptian-Albian quartz diorites, Albian (Cretaceous) transgressive sedimentary rocks, Tertiary continental sediments intruded by Pontian (Miocene) microdiorites, Tertiary-Quaternary hornblende andesites, and Pliocene conglomerates. Prior to the Aptian the region was part of a eugeosyncline undergoing sedimentary filling from the east, with contemporaneous submarine volcanic extrusions and progressive metamorphism at depth. Two granitized pre-cordilleran ranges developed on the site of the present mountain chains during the Aptian and Albian. In adjacent basins, the extrusion of basic submarine lavas continued into the Paleocene, when Laramide uplift occurred. Continental sediments and andesitic volcanics were deposited during the Tertiary, and were intruded by Pontian (Miocene) microdiorites. The principal uplift occurred in the Pliocene, along large marginal faults. Pyrite, sphalerite, and galena, with silver and gold, occur in the Aptian-Albian diorite and the Tertiary microdiorite.

AB - ABSTRACT: Three genetically different types of granite occur in the Andes of Colombia and Bolivia. This preliminary paper summarizes their known characteristics and origins. One type includes anatectic and synkinematic granites resulting from ultrametamorphism in the solid state within regions characterized by only slight folding. This type of granitization began with the upward migration of a basic front. A second type is of intrusive origin, formed as a result of the fusion of preexisting rocks during phases of intense movement within high levels of the crust. This type is the classic magmatic granite crystallizing from molten magma. The melting takes place in zones of tension such as synclines, and may form diapirs. The third type develops by selective metasomatism of effusive basic submarine rocks. This type characteristically occurs in geanticlinal ridges.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Colombian Andes show the effects of Hercynian (late Paleozoic), Cretaceous-Tertiary and Pontian (Miocene) metallogenic epochs. Hercynian granites of the Cordillera Oriental, formed by the granitization of calcareous shale that had undergone melting in the meso-epizone, enclose gold- and silver-bearing Fe, Cu, Pb, and Zn sulfide ore bodies. Cretaceous-Tertiary diorites, resulting from quartz-alkalic metasomatism of ophiolitic rocks, include dikes containing chalcopyrite, auriferous pyrite and marmatite, argentiferous galena, and cinnabar. Miocene microdiorites resulting from the melting and subsequent diapiric movement of Cretaceous-Tertiary diorites include subvolcanic dikes with chalcopyrite, auriferous pyrite and marmatite, and argentiferous galena.
