AB - ABSTRACT: Coal beds at various localities in the vicinity of Cucuta, Colombia, all occur in the Los Cuervos formation, to which an upper Cretaceous age has been assigned but which recent studies show to be lower Tertiary (lower middle Paleocene to lowermost Eocene). The coals are suitable for the production of coke. The section at the producing mine in the area is described, and data on mining methods and reserves are reported.

AB - ABSTRACT: Analysis of clays from the Honda formation (Tertiary) at different localities in Tolima, Colombia, showed some samples to be montmorillonitic bentonite, others to be mixtures of halloysitic and kaolinitic clays. Field observations indicate that commercially significant amounts of bentonite are present, but further investigations are necessary before exploitation is warranted.

AB - ABSTRACT: Data supplied by deep-sea geologic mapping and further study of deposition by turbidity currents will undoubtedly supplement present information obtained by seismic refraction surveys and may lead to solution of the problem as to whether processes of continental growth or continental foundering are active in the Caribbean basin. The section between western Cuba and the continental slope off Colombia is essentially of continental thickness, but one of the elements of the section, the Cayman trench, is a typical ocean basin-type structure.

AB - ABSTRACT: The compression folds and faults in the Perija sierra, Venezuela, are predominantly northeasttrending; these are disturbed by more or less local faults and dislocations. A system of transverse faults in the direction of the Arena Blanca cuts the southern and south-central part of the range, and the transverse system of the east-west Oca fault cuts and bounds the range on the north. After a discussion of some of the details of the fault systems, the geologic history of the range is outlined.

AB - ABSTRACT: The outstanding structural features of the Guajira peninsula (Colombia) are the southern Guajira platform in the south, the Guajira trough and the central massif in the center, and the Caribbean geosyncline in the northwest. An Oligo-Miocene basin occurs in the southeast (Cosineta basin). The Guajira platform is underlain by the Triassic Cojoro group, comprising continental, marine, and lagoonal to deltaic sediments and a sequence of completely marine Cretaceous formations. The trough is filled with Jurassic deposits overlain by a Cretaceous sequence similar to that of the platform. The geosynclinal sediments are mainly slightly metamorphosed black silts intruded by granodiorite and granite batholiths and basic and ultrabasic dikes. The Paleocene Guasare formation outcrops in the southeast and upper Eocene sediments occur in the northern part of the peninsula.

AB - ABSTRACT: Two marine Pleistocene terraces at elevations of 20 and three meters on Tierrabomba island near Cartagena (Colombia) are correlated with the 21 meter Penholoway and Silver Bluff terraces on the north Atlantic shoreline. Biostatistical and taxonomic studies of algae, foraminifera, Anthozoa, Amphineura, scaphopods, pelecypods, gastropods, arthropods, and ostracods were made in three localities on the island. Two subfacies in a general bay environment are distinguished. One bay subfacies is slightly influenced by communication with the open sea, and the other bay subfacies represents shallow quiet waters, the bottoms of which were covered with extensive algal vegetation. This latter subfacies represents a barely modified primitive biocenosis. Because there is much similarity between faunal groups at all localities, resemblance indices according to Pirlot, Crusafont, and Truyols formulas were calculated. These formulas are briefly evaluated with respect to their ability to discriminate between similar faunal groups.

AB - ABSTRACT: Bluish marls at Cerro de la Popa in Cartagena (Colombia) are 155 meters thick but thin to 30 meters at nearby Cerro Limitada. Only the upper rocks of Cerro de la Popa are present at Cerro Limitada. The following floral families were represented in the samples for a pollen sequence: Gramineae, Rubiaceae, Loganiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Compositae, Malvaceae, Ericaceae, Lythraceae, Aquifoliaceae, Betulaceae, Malphigiaceae, Epacridaceae, Bombacaceae, Valerianaceae, Umbelliferae, Polygonaceae, Coniferae, Lycopodiaceae, Cyatheaceae, Polypodiaceae, and undifferentiated angiosperms. The floral character indicates a cool climate. The occurrence of Alnus is presumed to indicate an origin of this form from Central America or the Antilles. On the basis of pollen analysis and the presence of Alnus, the rocks are considered to be of upper Pliocene age, although there is a remote possibility that they could be of lower Pleistocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: The type skull of Equus lasallei Daniel, an important third interglacial Pleistocene horse from the Bogota plateau, is redescribed. The womer's arrangement cannot be observed, but according to its anatomical and dentary character the genus can be referred to the subgenus Amerhippus. The species is recognizable by its high and particularly elongated skull which gives it a rather dolichocephalic form, and by the length of the diastem and the relative slenderness of the rostrum which are similar to E. (A.) curvidens and Grevy's zebra. Although the type skull is that of an individual in advanced old age, the upper cheek teeth show the fossetes widely developed and the enameled line complexly wrinkled. It is concluded that E. (A.) curvidens and E. (A.) andium probably do not occur on the high plateaus of Bogota. Also, E. (A.) andium cannot be revised because isolated teeth are the only materials extant.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Cretaceous in the Garca Rovira area along the eastern border of the Santander massif has a thickness of less than 2000 meters and is transgressive onto the metamorphics and quartzites of the massif. There is considerably more sandstone in the Cretaceous here than in equivalent strata to the west. Beds from Valanginian to Maestrichtian age are recognized. The Giron formation of Jurassic-Triassic age is absent due to pre-Cretaceous truncation along the border of the massif. It is present on a minor scale to the east, where it increases in thickness to 150 meters. Three major tectonic elements are present: two north-south trending synclines with an intervening complex anticline. The structure of this region consists of a series of folds and faults that are in marked contrast to the structure west of the Santander massif, which is simple block faulting. In this structurally more simple area, the Mesozoic sedimentary section is 3000 to 4000 meters thicker than in the Garca Rovira area.

AB - ABSTRACT: Three important aspects of the stratigraphy of the Garca Rovira area in southeastern Santander are the constancy of some horizons allowing correlations with the regions of Cundinamarca and Ro Sogamoso; the thickness of the total Cretaceous, which does not exceed 2000 meters; and its contrast with the Cundinamarca area where the same time interval is represented by more than 10,000 meters of sediments. Considering the thickness of the Turonian and Maestrichtian, which are each in excess of 300 meters, as well as the thickness of other Cretaceous stages, the beds representing the Barremian and Santonian stages must be very thin. Exogyra is so abundant in all beds that it could be studied from a phylogenetic viewpoint.

AB - ABSTRACT: Bovids are absent in the pre-Pleistocene fauna of South America, but during the Pleistocene, the development of various grasses offered a favorable environment for the emigration of nearctic bovines. Their limited expansion could indicate their recent emigration. A review of the occurrence of the wild Bovidae in South America during the Pleistocene and Recent concludes that only Platatherium pampaeum from the Pleistocene of Argentina is significant, although its characters and relationships must still be critically evaluated. A new monotypic genus, Colombibos atactodontus, is described from Soata (Department of Boyaca, Colombia). This new genus, which is referred to the late Pleistocene, is recognized by its molar-like morphology of P4.
