AB - ABSTRACT: "The structural framework in its present configuration has its origin mainly in the fold movements of the Cretaceous- Eocene (Laramic) and late Miocene-Pliocene (Andean) orogenies. . . . The southern group which rises from the divergent branching of the South American Andean cordillera swings northeastwards and eastward through Colombia and Venezuela, trending roughly parallel with the northern margin of the Guiana shield in the classic relation of orogenic belt to stable foreland. Strong folding, outward thrusting and moderate metamorphism characterise these fold belts. The eastern branch leads through the coast ranges of E. Venezuela to the northern range of Trinidad.".

AB - ABSTRACT: The tableland southwest of Bucaramanga, Colombia, is composed of a series of Triassic-Jurassic formations (Giron series) unconformably overlying a basement of igneous and metamorphic rocks and overlain with slight unconformity by Cretaceous deposits. The structure is relatively simple; it is characterized by a system of north-south faults and flexures, representing adjustments of the sedimentary cover to dislocations in the basement. The drainage system which was established after block faulting and tilting in late Tertiary-Quaternary time has been modified by extensive stream capturing.

AB - ABSTRACT: "The middle Magdalena valley is a depressed area of some 12,500 square miles lying between the central and eastern ranges of the Colombian Andes. Its sedimentary fill ranges in age from Paleozoic to Recent. In Cretaceous time this area formed only a small central part of a much more extensive basin area, the Colombian geosyncline, whereas, of the basin which developed in Eo-Oligocene time, it formed a western shallow margin, deepening rapidly eastward. Commercial production of heavier asphaltic- and naphthenic-base oils is being obtained from Tertiary reservoirs at La Cira-Infantas, Casabe, Velasquez, and Catagallo. Some lighter paraffinic crudes have been found in Cretaceous reservoirs at Buturama and Totumal. The location of these areas with respect to their position in the Tertiary and Cretaceous basins supports the hypothesis that heavy oils form first and migrate to the margins or shelf areas, and the lighter oils are confined to traps located in a more central part of the depositional basin.".

AB - ABSTRACT: Geologic and climatic conditions of Colombia, particularly of the central cordillera of the Andes, favor deep and rapid rock alteration, especially of the highly feldspathic granitic massif. The central cordillera is a granodioritic batholith that has been symmetrically uplifted, with granite forming the core and base. The whole is bounded by deep grabens separating the cordilleras. The orogeny dates from the middle of the Mesozoic. The rivers are slow-flowing on the peneplaned surface of the massif, rapid in their intermediate courses down the slopes, and slow again in the Tertiary basins separating the ranges.
