AB - ABSTRACT: The Utica sandstone (Berriasian), Murca Formation (Upper Valanginian), Cumbre Formation (Berriasian) and Rosablanca Formation (Valanginian) comprise the Lower Cretaceous sedimentary sequence in the central part of the Cordillera Oriental. This works presents a probable depositional setting for the Lower Cretaceous clastic and calcareous units based on petrographic and stratrigraphic analysis. The Late Valanginian basin was divided into a central depocenter (Murca Formation), a southwestern shelf (Utica sandstone) and a northern platform (Cumbre and Rosablanca formations). The Cumbre and Rosablanca formations were deposited in shallow marine environments in the Tablazo-Magdalena basin, while the Utica sandstone and Murca Formation were deposited in shallow water and deeper water respectively by turbiditic currents. The sediments for the southern units came from the west, probably from the Paleo-Central Cordillera. The sediments for the northern units came from the Santander-Floresta paleomassif. The name Murca Formation is proposed for the turbiditic basal unit that crops out in the core of the Murca anticline, and a type locality is proposed.

AB - ABSTRACT: Detailed mapping of the rocks along the Upper Magdalena Valley-Eastern Cordillera border reveals a sedimentary sequence deformed by a series of east-dipping and WNW-vergent folds and thrusts during the late Maastrichtian-Pleistocene. The shortening increases from south to north. Two structural provinces exist, each with a different style of deformation. This is associated with two different Tertiary stratigraphic sequences on both sides of the Boqueron Fault. The Western Province extendswest of the Boqueron Fault, with NNE/SSW-trending structures rooted in basement, and is represented by the Magdalena Fault and the Buenos Aires-Buena Vista fault system. These may be associated with pre-existing structures as old as pre-Cretaceous. The Eastern Province extends east of the Boqueron Fault, with N/S-trending structures that truncate the Western Province structures. The shortening is taken up by faults rooted in basement, represented by the Nanche Fault, as well as by shallow imbricate splays represented by the Boqueron-Quinini fault system. The N/S-trending structures may be associated with the Andean Orogeny during the Miocene-Oligocene, when the main phase of faulting developed.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Villeta Group (Late Valanginian-Early Coniacian) consists of gray and dark gray to black claystone, siltstone and mudstone; it was deposited in offshore to prodeltaic environments, under oxic to dysaerobic bottom conditions, in an epicontinental sea with a subdued bottom topography. The stratigraphic sequence shows two maximum transgression events represented by the deposition of siliceous siltstone and daystone of the Hilo and Frontera Formations. The composition of the Villeta Group in general is quartz mudstone with some lithic mudstone in the lower unit. The clay mineralogy of the mudstone (XRD) suggests the existence of three main episodes of volcanism that may have occurred during the Hauterivian-Barremian, Albian, and Turonian times in the Central Cordillera.

AB - ABSTRACT: This paper describes the lithostratigraphic units of the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia west of Bogota and proposes an interpretation of the depositional paleoenvironments. Lateral changes in facies and thickness of the Cretaceous record of the western flank of the Cordillera Oriental suggest differentially subsided portions of the crust were probably bounded by NW-oriented normal faults contemporaneous with Early Cretaceous sedimentation. In the most subsided central part, the Cundinamarca Trough, the lowermost exposed Cretaceous rocks record turbidite sedimentation, while shallow marine to littoral sedimentation occurred in the southern marginal zone of the Cundinamarca Trough. Lateral changes of facies and thickness are consistent with the subsidence history proposed by Fabre (1987). Most of the Cretaceous sedimentary record consists of dark colored shales that represent distal facies deposited mainly on a poorly oxygenated mud-dominated shelf area. The most distal facies record regional oceanographic events probably related to eustatic elevated level, such as the Albian and Turonian oceanic anoxic events. The Upper Cretaceous section records relative sea-level changes that it is possible to correlate throughout the basin and with eustatic changes. Cretaceous sedimentation ended with a regional regression and progradation of shallow shelf to littoral sands followed by paralic sedimentation and the complete filling of the basin. Tertiary sedimentation records the history of deformation and uplift of the Cordillera Oriental. Lower Tertiary deposits of the Sabana de Bogota record braided and meandering fluvial sedimentation related to the early uplift of some portions of the Cordillera. Lower Tertiary coarse detrital deposits of the Guaduas-Jerusalen Syncline record alluvial, braided, and meandering fluvial sedimentation related to several pulses of uplift of the Cordillera Central and some slightly raised areas of the Cordillera Oriental and the Magdalena Valley.
