Ralph Pryde Bequest

It was agreed that the Clerk should remit the sum of £10 to the College of Technology in respect of the prize to be awarded to this year’s winner, namely Leslie Wallace of 83 Heriot Crescent Methil Fife.

Craft Tie

Although Sinclair Aitken was not able to be present the Clerk read his letter as also the quotation received from T.I.E.C.O. it was the general feeling of the Meeting that in view of the heave commitment which would have to be made by the Club in ordering 200 ties at the price quoted of £2.30 each plus VAT a definite indication of support would have to be obtained from Craftsmen and it was decided that the Clerk should ask Craftsmen in the letter to them concerning the Annual Dinner to remit the price to be charged for the tie and after the response has been shown it can be decided whether or not to proceed with a bulk order. Should there be insufficient response the money obtained will be returned to Craftsmen. The Meeting after deliberation decided that he price to be charged by he Club for ties will be £2.75 each.

Annual Dinner

The Deacon reported that all Speakers for he Annual Dinner to be held on 22nd November had been arranged and the Clerk reported that the Master of Ceremonies was to be in attendance. Sample Menus and prices from Invercarse Hotel were on the Table and after careful consideration the Meeting decided to hold the Ticket price at the same level as last year’s price namely £6 per Ticket. The Meeting left it with the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to arrange a suitable Menu with the management of the Hotel.

There being no further business the Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Deacon.

Minutes

Craft Tie

It was reported that 70 ties had been ordered by Members of the Craft and had been paid for and thereafter considerable discussion took place as to the matter of ordering the ties from TIECO following their quotation dated 3rd October 1978. The Committee bore in mind that the bulk order of 200 ties would cost £2.30 each plus VAT which would involve a total outlay of approximately £496. The Committee resolved to proceed with the purchase and instructed Mr Aitken to make arrangements and empowered him to reduce the order to a total of 150 ties.

Annual Dinner 1978

The Clerk reported tat the Annual Dinner held in Invercarse Hotel on 22nd November 1978 had been a very successful function but that it had ended with a deficit of £49.55 and a short statement was on the table showing how the deficit was made up. It was agreed that the Craft can no longer continue having losses to his extent at these functions and it was agreed that pricing of tickets for further functions would require sensible and careful treatment. One suggestion made was that there might be scale so that Craftsmen bringing along more guests might be charged less.

New Rules of Nine Trades
Members of the Committee had an opportunity of examining the draft New Rules prior to the Meeting and the Deacon pointed out that the revision had been brought about a the present Rules had been in existence without change for over 100 years. The Deacon pointed out that there is a proposed new Office Bearer to be styled “The Collector” who will have two years operation with the Deacon Convener. The New Rules also provide for the Chaplain to be Minister of St Andrew’s Church and the Rules will also clarify the format of the General Fund Court comprising the Deacon Convener, the Collector, the preceding Deacon Convener, the Nine Deacons of the individual trades and one representative from each Craft. there will also be a Master Court as in the Trades of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, and this Court will comprise the Deacon Convener, the Collector, the preceding Deacon Convener the Auditor and four Members of the Trades. Ex-Deacon Harold Adams concluded by giving background information as to the proceedings which had preceded the formation of the new Craft Rules. The Committee approved the rues as drafted.
Function Dates 1979

The Clerk intimated that he had options open with Queen’s Hotel of the Spring Making to be held on either 7th or 21st March and the Autumn Making on either 26th September, 3rd October or 10th October. The Meeting resolved to have the makings on 7th March and 26th September.

The Clerk reported that the Annual Dinner dated fixed with Invercarse Hotel for this year and next year are as follows viz:

21st November 1979 and 26th November 1980.

March Making 1979

Two applications for admissions as Members were on the Table i.e. Mr E W Merry and Mr Alexander Stewart. Both were approved and arrangements were left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and the Clerk to proceed with the usual arrangements and to obtain further applications for admission. The Toasts for the function were considered and it was resolved to have the Toast to The Nine Incorporated Trades as also the Toast to the University of Dundee and the Clerk was instructed to write Professor Neville of the University of Dundee to ask him to reply to the toast whom failing a delegate appointed by the Principal. The Ticket price was discussed and it was left that this would be left at £5 as before but with power to the Deacon and the Clerk to arrange that the price be increased to £5.25 if they thought fit after arrangements had been made for Menu etc with Queen’s Hotel.

Other Business

The Clerk reported that the pensions had been paid just prior to Christmas but that the money had been very late in arriving from the Clerk to the Nine Incorporated Trades which had caused anxiety to Mrs Murray one of the pensioners and which had necessitated payments being made to her on account. The Clerk stated that he had no information a to any recent review of the craft’s securities having been undertaken and felt that it was proper that this should be done from time to time. The Committee agreed and it was left to the Clerk to approach a Stockbroker Member with the request that he review he securities.

There being no other business the Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 23rd August 1979 were read and approved.

Matters Arising

With regard to the Craft ties the Clerk reported that sales to date total 78 and some discussion followed on the best method of me

Marketing. It was agreed that the availability should be included in the circular about to go out to all Craftsmen for the AGM and it will be indicated there that it is hoped that the Craft Ties should be worn at all Spring and Autumn Suppers. The cost of the tie was further considered and the Meeting resolved that the ties from now on would be sold at a price of £5 each.

The Boxmaster reported as to the information given to the Nine Trades on the Craft’s paraphernalia including specifically the Banner and had given the dimensions of the banner to the Nine Trades following their general enquiry into the suggestion that the banners might be hung in St Andrew’s Church. The Craft will not in any way forced into the matter.

The Boxmaster reported again on the existence of what appears to be a Clerk’s Chair belonging to the Craft which matches with the Deacon’s Chair and the Boxmaster’s Chair. The information is ha this third chair presently reposes in the offices of Messers Henderson & Loggie. It was left to the Clerk to endeavour to make an informal approach with a view to reclaiming this chair.

The Clerk read out the report which he had obtained from Parsons & Co Stockbrokers (via Craftsman Alastair Nicoll) dated 26th January 0979 on the Craft’s investments. This report indicated that the investments have a total market value as at 23rd January 1979 of £1318 bringing a gross income of £127 per annum and given an average gross yield of 9.65%. The Meeting accepted the report.

Annual Accounts

The accounts for the Craft year to 30th June 1979 were on the table. Te Clerk explained that he had so far not had time to submit these to the Honorary Auditors for audit but was on the point of doing so after the Meeting. he went over the accounts in some detail with explanations and in particular pointed out that the income shown in the Accounts in respect of the investments for the financial year is less than it should be due to the fact hat certain dividends had been sent to the previous Clerk and were returned to the Bank of England The Clerk had subsequently received payment of these dividends but after the close of the Account. The additional income received after that date is £68.78. Likewise the Clerk explained that the dues payable to the Nine Incorporated Trades in respect of the Craftsmen admitted at the Spring Meeting had not yet been paid. These matters will be pointed out to the Auditors.

Arrangements for Annual General Meeting and Making

The Clerk reported that it is likely that there will be six applications for admission and he went over these and obtained approval to circulate the Craftsmen. The Clerk further indicated that although a ticket price for the Autumn Supper has not yet been decided, indications from Queen’s Hotel are that the price per head will increase by roughly £1 and it will therefore appear the ticket price will be £6. The Meeting left it to the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make the usual arrangements. The Clerk is to check on the existence of an Ex-Deacon’s Badge.

Sinclair Aitken felt that perhaps the method of election of Committee Members could be tidied up and it was agreed that due consideration should be given by the Committee prior to the AGM with a view to having names suitable and likely Committee members in mind. It was agreed that Fred Conacher should be asked to serve as a Committee Member again at the AGM.

General discussion took place as to the expediency of taking care to bring in the “right” type of Craftsmen – men who are of the right calling and particularly likely to remain on Dundee and to serve the Craft.

On the format of the AGM the clerk suggested that it might be good to hand the newly inducted Craftsmen something tangible long with their Certificate of Admission and the Committee agreed to the suggestion that a Craft Tie should be presented to each newly craftsman at the AGM. The cost of the tie would be collected by the Clerk from the individual Craftsmen along with their entry dues etc.

Discussion ensued as to suitable Speakers for the Autumn Meeting and it was resolved that Ex-Deacon Harold Adams will ascertain if Jim Ewart will be prepared to make the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades, Bill Young volunteered to propose the Vote of Thanks at that Meeting. The Clerk is to write Convener Archie McNab asking him to Reply to the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades at the Autumn Meeting and also to reply to the Toast at the AGM.

Annual Dinner

The Annual Dinner of the Craft will be held on 21st November 1979 and matters were again left in the hands of the Deacon, Immediate Past Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to arrange. Discussion ensued as to possible speakers and the Boxmaster is to approach John Little (Tayside Chief Constable) and Gordon Wilson (Member of Parliament) to ascertain if they are available. The Clerk is to write Tayside Region Convener William Fitzgerald to ask him to reply to the Toast to the Region.

Other Competent Business

George Crabb reported that the pensioner Mrs Scott has been in Hospital having suffered from a heart attack. She is unable to look after her aged Mother Mrs Curtis who is also a pensioner and who is now aged 96 and accordingly it is hoped that they will find a suitable home for Mrs Curtis.

The Meeting concluded at 7.15 p.m. with a vote of thanks to the Deacon for chairing the Meeting.

F Gordon Allan Deacon.

Accounts

The Accounts of the Craft for the year ended 30th June 1978 an Abstract of which have been circulated to Members prior to the Meeting were submitted for approval. Mr Gordon Lowden one of the Honorary Auditors explained that the final audited accounts in the form of Income and expenditure Account had been altered slightly from the abstract which had been circulated to Members. The reason was that certain income of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1979 had been received late but nevertheless this Income had been included into the Accounts to show the true position and the Accounts now disclose a surplus for the year of £50.64. The deficit on the Suppers and Annual Dinner held during the course of the year was now down of a figure of £35 which is a considerable reduction on the deficit for the previous year. The Deacon explained that the Committee is very conscious that realistic pricing of tickets for the various functions should be adhered to so that these functions can be run on a self-supporting basis. Mr Lowden indicated that the surplus for the year is mainly due to the voluntary donations collected amounting to £52.

On the motion of Craftsman Cecil Black seconded by Craftsman Hamish Laurie the Accounts were approved.

Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on 23rd August 1979 were read and approved

Matters Arising

The Clerk reported that an opportunity had not yet arisen for a suitable approach to be made by him to re-claim Craft Chair believed to be presently in the offices of Messrs. Henderson & Loggie

Autumn Supper

The Clerk reported on the last Supper/Making. There had been 56 tickets sold at £6 each and. after the Queens Hotel account had been paid there was a profit shown of £1.45. in addition voluntary donations from Craftsmen present amounted to £52.

The Clerk also reported that the six new members inducted at the Making had brought in a total sum of £100.80 (i.e. £16.80 each): £30 had been paid as dues to the Nine Incorporated Trades (i.e. £5 each) thus leaving a net increase to the Craft funds on the induction of £70.

The Clerk further reported that there had been a considerable impetus in the sale of Craft ties both prior to and since the Suppor and a further 47 ties had been sold at £3 each. The total number of ties to date amount to 129.

Pensions

The Deacon reported that he had already visited some of the Pensioners and would visit the remainder very soon and the Meeting was reminded that all possible endeavours will be made by the Craft to have Mrs. Murray, one of the Pensioners, receive a full pension instead of the one-half pension that she has been receiving heretofore.

Annual Dinner

The Deacon reported that he has been in touch with Gordon Wilson M.P. who has indicated that he will be very pleased to propose the toast to the Trade and Prosperity of Tayside at the Annual Dinner but that, unfortunately, Chief Constable John Little was unable to be present. The Meeting discussed possible Speakers and the Deacon indicated that he has already approached John Ray a member of the Craft to propose the toast but it is not definite that John Hay can oblige. The Meeting agreed failing John Hay that Howard Price should be asked to propose the Toast. The Clerk reported that he has written both Convener William Fitzgerald Tayside Regional Council and Deacon Convener Archibald C McNab of the Nine incorporated Trades and both will be present at the Dinner and able to speak.

The Meeting instructed the Clerk to invite John C Stokes Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow to reply to the toast to the guests.

The meeting discussed at some length the likely pricing of the tickets for the Annual Dinner and, whilst it was left to the Sub-Committee comprising the Deacon, Immediate Past Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to fix this, it was felt that the ticket price should have a ceiling of £7.50 if possible.

The Clerk fully reported on the renewal premium now demanded by General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation Ltd. for the All Risks Policy; that the premium has now escalated from £17.00, for last year's premium, to a premium of £29.25. The Clerk reported that the premium notice as put out is wrong but arrangements have been made (subject to the meeting approving the renewal on the requested basis) to have the premium correctly adjusted. It was recorded that the main item of insurance is, in fact, the Deacon's Badge of Office and is covered for a sum insured of £1250 and bears the highest insurance rating at £1.50%. The other items included in the insurance comprising the Banner and various paraphernalia rating between 75p. and £1.25 per cent. The meeting was clear that the Committee would-be failing in its duty if it refrained from fully insuring all the Craft's possessions for full replacement, value and the Clerk was instructed to proceed with the renewal of the insurance on the Insurance Company's increased premium.

There being no further business the Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Deacon.

F Gordon Allan
Minutes of Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held at City House 16 Overgate Dundee on Tuesday 22nd January 1980 at 5.30 p.m.

Present: Deacon F Gordon Allan, Boxmaster David W Richardson, Dr William T Yeamam, Dr Ronald C Graham, George Hogg, Ian Smith, Fred Conacher and the Clerk

Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on 17th October 1979

were read and approved.
Matters Arising

The Clerk reported he had now had an opportunity of speaking to Mr. D. Slidders of Messrs. Henderson & Loggie regarding the Chair in the offices of Messrs. Henderson & Loggie which had been believed was the property of the Craft. The suggestion that this Chair was the property of the Bonnetmaker Craft was vigorously refuted by Mr. Slidders who had indicated that this Chair had been the personal property of the late Mr. Loggie (former Clerk) for whom the Chair had been personally made as a replica of the Deacon's Chair. The Meeting agreed that the matter should be allowed to drop.

Tie Sales

The Clerk reported that tie sales to date had reached 140 which left 60 ties in stock. It was appreciated that, with an average of say 12 new Craftsmen per annum, this would account for all ties being used up in five years time without allowing for any replacement and/or other ties required by Craftsmen. It was agreed, however, that there should be no re-order at this time.

The Clerk reported that this function had proved a financial success. There had been 121 tickets sold at £7.50 each and there was a profit on the function of £95.45. In other respects, the function had been well received; the meal had been very good and the only criticism which had been heard (no doubt from a minority) was to the effect that some of the speaches had been over-long. The Meeting discussed whether there should be any change in the general format of this annual function but, in general, it was felt that there was little change required.

The Deacon reported that he had been presented with a new Bonnet by the Deacon of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow when he had been at the Dinner. This was a very presentable Bonnet and the Deacon suggested that he might well be able to make use of the Bonnet and wear it when initiating new Craftsmen were the Committee agreed that such a solemn sight might be fitting, although the Bonnet might not.

March Making

Five applications for admission as Members were on the table i.e. Mr Robert E Simpson, Mr Iain Flett and Mr Kenneth G Gordon. The Clerk also reported that an application for membership from Mr Ian Sibbald should also have been on the table and it was agreed tat these six applications should be admitted at the March Making and it was left to the Clerk to ensure they would attend. So far as the forthcoming Supper is concerned the Meeting left it in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make suitable arrangements with the Hotel and to arrange a menu. The Meeting appreciated that prices had escalated even since the September 1979 Supper but it felt that the ticket cost should not exceed £6.50 if at all possible. The toasts for the function were considered and it was resolved to have the toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades as also the toast to the Veterinary Profession. It was left in the hands of Ian Smith to approach Mr. Douglas Brodie to request him to reply to this Toast whom failing Mr Neil McCormack will be approached by Mr. Smith. On learning in whose hands the reply lies, the Clerk will then approach Craftsman Ian Duncan whom failing Craftsman Derek Weir to propose the toast.

Other Function Dates

It was noted that the Autumn Making and Supper will be held on Wednesday, 1st October 1980 and the Annual Dinner will be held on Wednesday, 26th November 1980.

In connection with the latter function it was agreed by the Meeting that Ex- Deacon John Allardyce should approach Craftsman David Purdie to request him to propose the toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades.
Pensions

The Deacon reported that the three pensions had been paid in November. A full pension is now £400 and the Deacon reported that, after a special plea had been made by him to the Fund Court, it was resolved that Mrs Murray should have her one-half pension of £200 supplemented by a grant of £200 so that she also received £400 for which she was truly grateful.

There being no further business the Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chair.

Minutes

The Minutes of Meeting of the Committee held on 22nd January 1980 were read and approved.

Annual Accounts

The Clerk reported that the Annual Accounts had been approved by the Auditors but that there were two points the Auditors wished brought to the attention of the Committee before finalising the Accounts before docketting same. The Clerk reported that one of these matters related to the Ralph Pryde bequest as both Mr. Findlay and Mr. Lowden, the Auditors, felt that the Ralph Pryde bequest should be given more prominence in the accounts and the Committee duly considered the suggestion that the investment income of the Ralph Pryde bequest should be shown in the accounts under a separate heading, or appendix, with the expenditure thereunder also shown and, if appropriate, any balance remaining being transferred to the Craft funds. The Clerk reported that he had read back through the Minutes in an endeavour to trace the instructions for the payments to the College of Technology etc. under the Ralph Pryde bequest but it does appear that the whole matter of the expenditure of the Ralph Pride Bequest income needs tidying up and the Committee agreed that this matter should be left over to be dealt with at a future meeting of the Committee. likewise the Clerk reported that he had traced the inception of the Benevolent Fund shown in accounts and reported that this commenced in November 1948 when the then Committee established the Benevolent Fund with the stated purpose of using it to pay grants to Member or their dependents on need of financial assistance. A sum of £10 had been transferred from the general fund to establish the Benevolent Fund. The Committee agreed that the matter of the Fund should also receive further consideration at a subsequent Meeting

Arrangements for Annual General Meeting and Making

The Clerk reported that there are six applications for admission to the Craft on the table in respect of Mr Denis M Dear, Mr Gordon Laird, Mr D A Adams, Mr W Gordon Withers, Mr J R Edgar and Mr Alex G Robbie. The Committee approved these applications for admission at the next Making. The Committee left it in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make arrangements with the Hotel for the Supper and agreed that the ticket price should be f7.

In regard to the four new Committee members required to be elected at the Annual General Meeting, the Committee considered possible names and decided that Messrs. Peter Clunie, Alistair Scott, Martin MacLean and Mr Murray Wood might well be put forward to serve a period of two years.

The matter of the toast list and programme for the Making was considered and it was decided that Dr. Donald Rushton should be approached to reply to a toast to "The Experts" to be proposed by Mr David Smith, Procurator Fiscal. It was left to the Clerk to approach these gentlemen. It was decided to ask Mr. Robert Nimmo to propose vote of thanks at the Making.

Annual Dinner

The Clerk reported that Dr. David Purdie had. agreed to propose the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Committee instructed the Clerk to endeavour to procure Mr. Buchanan Smith or Mr. Fraser, Members of Parliament, to propose the toast to the Trade and Prosperity of Tayside Region. Mr. William Fitzgerald, Convener of the Regional Council will be asked to reply to the latter toast and. the usual invitations will be given out.

There being no further business the meeting closed at 8p.m.

Findlay, one of the Honorary Auditors introduced the Accounts and explained them. Mr. Findlay indicated that he and his co-Auditor felt that the Ralph Pryde Bequest might through time disappear from lack of use and they felt that the Accounts should show this Bequest separately so that the name of Ralph Pryde would not be lost sight of by the Craft. Mr. Findlay also suggested that salary of the Clerk was derisory in view of the work carried out by him and suggested that this matter should be referred to the Committee for consideration.

The Deacon thanked Mr. Findlay for his work and the accounts were unanimously approved by the Meeting.

AOCB

Mr W A Findlay raised the matter of admission dues and felt that these should be raised as they had not been altered for many years and he felt that the admission dues for Free Members should be £10, for unfree and Privileged Members £17 and for Non-Privileged Members £25.

However on the motion of Mr Findlay seconded by Dr John Langlands it was proposed to refer the mater to the Committee. There was a counter-motion not to refer the matter to the Committee proposed by Ex-Convener Alick Drummond and seconded by Mr Anderson. On the vote being taken the motion was carried.

Minutes of Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held at City House 16 Overgate Dundee on Thursday 23rd October 1980 at 5.30 p.m.

Present: Deacon F Gordon Allan, Boxmaster David W Richardson, Ex-Deacon John P Allardyce, Messers Murray Wood, Peter Clunie and Fred Conacher and the Clerk

Minutes

The Minutes of Meeting of the Committee held on 28th August 1980 were read and approved.

Autumn Supper

The Clerk reported on the Supper/Making held at Queens Hotel, on 1st October 1980. This had been a well attended function with 60 tickets sold at £7 each and there was a net surplus of £30.96. In addition, there had been a donation to the Craft funds from Ex-Deacon John G. Sibbald of £21.

12 ties had been sold at £3 each.

Some discussion took place in regard to the pricing of tickets for functions and the Deacon suggested that it might be an idea if the Suppers could be priced as closely as possible to the outlay involved without involving too much profit as it is the Craftsmen alone at Suppers who benefit. On the other hand, Ex-Deacon John Allardyce did remind the Committee that guests at the Annual Dinners are the responsibility of Craftsmen.

Pensions

The Deacon reported that the Craft would be putting forward the same pensioners as before for the Annual Pensions.

Annual Dinner

The Deacon reported that Mr. Alex. Fletcher, M.P., Minister for Industry and Education at the Scottish Office, had indicated that he will be pleased to propose the toast to the Trade and Prosperity of Tayside Region at the Annual Dinner - subject to Parliamentary duties allowing. The Meeting agreed that it would be expedient to have a reserve Speaker available for a fall-back situation. Should Mr. Fletcher be unable to attend and the Deacon reported that Mr. Robert Nimmo, Headmaster of the High School of Dundee, is prepared to fill the gap.

The ticket price was fixed at £8 - an increase of only 50p. over last year's ticket price.
Supper Making

The Clerk reported that he had made provisional dates for the 1981 dates for 1981 Suppers with Queens Hotel, Dundee for 4th March and 30th September and the Meeting approved these dates.

Ralph Pryde Bequest

The Meeting again discussed the position of prizes under the Ralph Pryde Bequest but felt that a fuller report might be helpful before coming to any decision and the Clerk arranged that he would Endeavour to have a report prepared for the next Committee Meeting.

Clerk’s Salary

The Deacon reminded the Meeting that the Annual General Meeting had remitted to the Committee to consider an increase in the Clerk’s salary. The clerk indicated to the Meeting that he was quite happy with the situation but that if the Committee was insistent he suggested that the salary should not be fixed at no more than £50 PA.

The Committee resolved to leave the matter for final decision to the next Meeting of the Committee.
Admission Fees

The Meeting discussed at some length the general proposal to increase admission dues payable by new Craftsmen and the Deacon reminded the Committee that the current admission dues had not been subject to amendment for very many years. The current dues of admission are

Free Member £5.25

Unfree Member £10.50

Privileged Member £10.50

Non-Privileged Member £16.80

Of these admission dues, a standard payment of £5 goes to the Nine Incorporated Trades as dues of admission. The Meeting resolved to leave over a decision to a subsequent Meeting.
There being no further business the meeting closed at 7 p.m. with a vote of thanks to the Deacon.

Present: Deacon F Gordon Allan, Boxmaster David W Richardson, Messers I L F Smith, Peter Clunie, Martin Maclean. Alistair Scott and the Clerk

Minutes

The Minutes of Meeting of the Committee held on 23rd October 1980 were read and approved.

Autumn Supper and Annual Dinner

The Clerk circulated financial reports with regard to the Supper held on 1st October 1980 and the Annual Dinner held on 26th November 1980, both had proved successful functions and the former had surplus of £30.96 and the latter at a surplus of £49. both functions showed a satisfactory increase.

Pensions

The Deacon reported that the pensions of £400 each were made to the three pensioners on the role. The Deacon expressed some regret that the Fund Court of the Nine Incorporated Trades had not deemed it fit to increase the pensions this year. He reported that he and the Boxmaster will be visiting the pensioners within the next two weeks

March Making 1981

Five applications for admission to the Craft were on the Table i.e. David Gowans, Kenneth Alistair Grant, John Alexander Murdoch Sturrock, Donald Neil Gordon and James D. Nairn. The Committee agreed that these names should be put forward for admission and it was hoped- that there would be a further applicant for the March Making. The Meeting left it in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and. Clerk to make suitable arrangements with the Hotel and to arrange a Meeting and fix the price. It was agreed that there should be a toast to the Glover Trade and that Craftsman Ian Flett should be asked to propose this toast and that the Deacon of the Glover trade be asked to reply to it. As usual there will be a toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Convener

Ralph Pryde Bequest

It was resolved that the remit from the last Meeting of the Committee the Clerk presented is report as to the position surrounding the Ralph Pryde Bequest. Discussion followed and the Meeting resolved to continue with the prizes to the College of Technology and to the Deportment of General Practice of the Medical Faculty of Dundee University on an annual basis and further that these prizes should be increased to £15 per annum. The Clerk was instructed to intimate the position to the Institutions making it clear that the prizes are continuing for as long as the Craft may decide and without any guaranteed period and that the Institutions should apply to the Clerk each year for the amount. It was resolved that the net annual balance should be credited to the to the Craft’s Benevolent Fund, the Meeting having agreed that the Benevolent Fund should be built up somewhat. Further the Clerk was instructed to take advice from Mr. Alistair Nicoll Stockbroker as to whether any change in holding of £1261.58 6% Funding. Loan 1993 should be made at the time and the Meeting left it with the Clerk to effect any change in this investment as may be advised by Mr. Nicoll.

Clerk's Salary

On the motion of the Deacon seconded by Mr. F Conacher and unanimously approved by the Meeting, it was resolved that the Clerk’s Salary be increased to £50 per annum.

Admission Dues

The Meeting further discussed the matter of increase of Admission Dues and unanimously resolved to recommend to the Annual Genera Meeting 1981 that Admission Dues should be increased as follows:

Free Member £10

Unfree Member £15

Privileged Member £15

Unprivileged Member £25

A.O.C.B.

The Clerk reported that the Chaplain to the Nine Incorporated Trades Mrs Iris Small Widow of the late Andrew Dargie B.Sc had donated back to the Craft her late husband’s Past Deacon’s Jewel. Mr Dargie had served as Deacon to the Craft for the years 1942/44. The Clerk reported that he had written thanking Mrs Small on behalf to the Craft for her generosity.

The Deacon referred to a custom of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow where what is names “a visitation” occurs at their Annual Dinner-

This is simply -that the Deacon and one other Member of another Craft "visits" the Craft during their Dinner and proposes a toast to the Craft in light hearted vein. It seems to go down very well and the Deacon felt that it served the purpose of keeping a degree of association between the various Crafts and that we might like to consider something similar either at our Annual Dinners or at Suppers. In general discussion, some opinion was expressed that the custom in Glasgow was no doubt steeped in historical tradition which worked well there but that it might be a different position for us Dundee. However the meeting resolved to leave the matter over for further discussion at next Meeting.

There being no further business the Meeting closed at 7 p.m. with a of thanks to the Deacon.
F Gordon Allan Deacon
Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee

Report by Clerk on Ralph Pryde

Bequest to Meeting of Committee

Held on 28th January 1981

This Report is prepared in accordance with remit from Committee Meeting held on 23rd October 1980.

I report the following facts gleaned from the Craft

  1. The late Ralph Pryde who died in 1966 left a bequest to the Craft without any specification of purpose.

  2. The Minutes show that the Craft duly considered the best method of investing and using the income. The sum of £1000 was initially invested on a Dundee Corporation Mortgage for a period of two years but when it matured in or around October 1971 the sum of £1000 was expended in the purchase of a holding of £1261.58 6% Funding Loan 1993. The present investment is still held giving a gross annual in-and a net annual income of £52.98.

  1. In August 1970 the Craft decided to give three prizes annually each of £10, for “an initial period of three years". These prizes were to the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art the College of Commerce and the College of Technology.

  2. In August 1971 the Craft decided to give an additional £5 "for a three year period" to the Department of General Practice of the Medical Faculty of Dundee University.

  1. The Minutes do not appear to refer to the Ralph Pryde Bequest or any relative matters until August 1976 when it was reported that the College of Commerce Prize-giving Ceremony was being discontinued a agreed then to give the £10 per annum to the College of Commerce for the purpose of providing library books on professional subjects and each book would have a label indicating it came from the Bonnetmaker Craft.

As far as I can gather, no payment of £10 under this decision was ever affected and I can find no trace of any payment made to the College of Commerce since 1976.

6. There is no reference in the Craft Minutes to the Ralph Pryde Bequest to August 1976.

7. On researching the Accounts of the Craft, it appears to be the position that no payment was made to the Duncan of Jordanston College of after 1972 but that the payments of £10 per annum continued to the College of Commerce and the College of Technology and the Medical Faculty, until the payments to the College of Commerce ceased.

  1. The present position is that annual payments continue to College of Technology (£10 p.a.) and to the Medical Faculty of University (3.a.).

  1. Of the net annual income of f52.98, there is therefore a balance of £37.98 p.a. unexpended and until now this has simply fallen into the Craft funds annually.

Deacon Collector’s Chair

The Deacon referred to the Deacon Convener's letter addressed to him dated 16th March 1981 concerning the proposed Deacon Collector's Chair copies of which letter had been circulated to the Committee Members with the notice calling the Meeting. The Deacon appraised the Meeting of the situation giving rise to this project and thereafter the Committee gave careful consideration and deliberation as to whether the Craft should make a contribution towards the cost of this Chair and the amount of the contribution.

Some opinion was expressed as to the reason for asking the various Crafts to contribute towards in view of the very substantial funds of the Nine Incorporated Trades as apposed to the funds of the individual Crafts but the Deacon indicated that the reason for asking the individual Crafts to contribute was that it was felt that the individual Crafts would probably wish to be associated with the idea.

The Meeting resolved to support the project but, being mindful of the funds of the Craft, felt that a severe restriction would require to be made in the amount and the Meeting decided (Mr. F.T.G. Conacher dissenting) to make a maximum contribution towards this Chair of £50. and the Clerk was instructed to write the Deacon Convener accordingly.

Deacon’s Chain of Office

The Deacon reported the difficulty which he and Past Deacons have experienced in wearing the Deacon's Chain which did not hang well.

The Deacon had accordingly consulted with Craftsman Scott Henderson (of Messrs. Matthew M. Henderson, Jewellers, Dundee) and reported as a result improvements had been made to the Chain of Office two new gold pins which have the effect of making the Chain sit when put round the neck and. also shows off the Chain to best advantage.

Likewise a new blue ribbon with gold bolt ring had been fitted. The total cost involved is £21 and whilst the Deacon was only too pleased to meet the cost himself the Meeting resolved at the instigation of the Clerk that it was only right and proper that this was accost to be net out of Craft funds and instructed the Clerk to pay accordingly.

There being no further business the Meeting closed at 6.10 p.m.

Minutes

The Minutes of the Meetings of the Committee held on 28th January 20th May 1981 were read and approved.

The Clerk reported, in regard to the Ralph Pryde Bequest Fund, that he had taken the advice of Mr. Alistair Nicoll, Stockbroker, as to the holding of £1261.58 6% Funding Loan 1993 and that, as a result, he had not made any change in this investment.

Annual Accounts

The Clerk went over the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th 1981 and made various explanations. The Deacon raised a query in regard to the interest on the Deposit Account held by the Craft and it was arranged that the Clerk would clear up the matter.

Arrangements for the AGM and Making

It was agreed, although a motion will be put forward at the AGM for an increase in the entrance dues payable by new Craftsmen, that the old dues will be extracted for those new members to be inducted at next A.G.M.

The Clerk reported that there are four applications for admission to, the Craft on the Table in respect of Dr. Henry Leadbitter, Norman E. Cuthbertson, John Maxwell and David B. Reid. The Committee approved these applications for admission at the next Meeting but felt that another two new members should be sought. It was left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make arrangements with the Queens Hotel for the Supper and agreed that the ticket price should be £8.

In regard to the four new Committee Members required to be elected at the A.G.M., the Committee considered possible names and decided that Messrs Ian Duncan, John Langlands, Bill Kidd and David Smith (whom failing Gordon Laird) might well be put forward to serve for a period of two years.

The matter of the Toast List and Programme for the Making was considered and it was decided that Gordon Laird should be approached to propose the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Boxmaster is to make approach. Martin Maclean’s offer to propose the Vote of Thanks at this function was gladly accepted by the Committee.

Annual Dinner

The Committee considered the proposers for the two main Toasts and decided to invite Mr A G Robertson of 1 Albany Terrace, Director of Extra-Mural Education at Dundee University to proposed the toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades and to invite Douglas F Hardie to propose the toast to Tayside Region.
Trade Records

The Committee discussed at length the offer given by the City Archivist Ian Flett, to have the Bonnetmaker records held on loan at the Archive Centre and after due consideration the Clerk was instructed to write Mr Flett thanking him for his kind offer but to refuse it.

The Deacon reported that arrangements were going ahead for the installation of the Trade Banners within St. Andrews Kirk and our Trade Banner will be hung there.

Present: Deacon David W Richardson, Boxmaster John Thomson, Immediate past-Deacon F Gordon Allan, Dr Hector Fowlie, Messers Gordon Laird, Murray Wood, Kenneth Gordon, Kenneth Malcolm and the Clerk

Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on 25th August were read and approved.

Arising from these Minutes, the Clerk reported that there is no Bank of Scotland Deposit Account.

Craft Investments

The Clerk reported that the holding of £500 8½% Treasury Stock matures on 15th January 1982 at par and the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk signed the relative redemption request. The Meeting discussed the re-investment of the redemption proceeds and agreed that the Clerk should take the advice of Mr. Alastair Nicoll, Stockbroker, at the time but empowered the Clerk to proceed to re-invest (subject to the Stockbroker's guidance) in a suitable medium-dated Government Stock.

The Clerk reported on the Supper/Making held at Queen's Hotel, on 30th September 1981. This had been a very well attended function and the only difficulty encountered by the Clerk was in connection with the collecting of ticket money from the Craftsmen and the Clerk felt that the present method of selling Supper tickets and c:Ile:ei of money requires review. He also reported that he is in correspondence with Queen's Hotel over the actual numbers attending as there is a difference of opinion and it may well be that a further three suppers will require to be paid for. However, at present time, the accounting for the Supper shows that had been sold at £8 each giving £528 with the Queen's Hotel account paid (so far). There is therefore a profit standing of £97.72.

The Meeting discussed the future method of selling tickets and collection of money for Supper/Makings and it was agreed that the-letter which is sent out by the Clerk should suffice and that Craftsmen should apply direct to the Clerk in future for tickers and that the Clerk alone will collect the ticket money and that Committee Members will not be involved in selling tickets or collecting money. However, it was agreed that Committee Members should endeavour as far as possible to see that the Craftsmen who normally attend these Meetings should not default.
Pensions

Past Deacon Mr. F. Gordon Allan explained the position that there are now only two Pensioners i.e. Mrs. Murray and Winifred Scott and Mr. Allan explained the difficulty which Mrs. Murray is presently encountering in connection with Social Security benefits which are likely to be cut down as a result of the pension she receives from the Craft. It was agreed that the Deacon will plead before the Fund Court for the full pension to be paid to Mrs. Murray but the Meeting agreed that Mrs. Murray is probably in need of particular assistance and Dr. Hector Fowlie volunteered to make some enquiries along these lines.

Annual Dinner

The Deacon and Clerk reported that all arrangements were in hand for the Dinner and that they had had a Meeting with Invercarse Hotel to arrange the menu and the letters to all Craftsmen had now been sent out. It was reported that Mr. A.G. Robertson, Director of Extra-Mural Education at Dundee University, had accepted the invitation to propose the toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades but that Mr. Douglas F. Hardie was unable to attend to propose the toast to Tayside Region. Mr. Harry Terrell, Director of Dundee and Tayside Chamber of Commerce and Industry has accepted the invitation propose this toast.

Supper/Making dates for 1982 etc.

The Clerk reported that had made provisional-dates for the 1982 Suppers with the Queens Hotel, Dundee for Wednesdays, 3rd March and 29th September 1982 and the Meeting approved these dates.

Provisional booking for the Annual Dinner at Invercarse Hotel for 1982 is 24th November 1982 and the Meeting approved this date also.
AOCB

1. The Deacon reported that he had had a query, rather than a complaint, from one Craftsman at the last Super Meeting in connection with the seating arrangements. Craftsmen are in the habit of turning in chairs to book seats and the result is that there are isolated chairs left free dotted throughout the room with the result that those Craftsmen coming in at the end are unable to sit together. The Meeting discussed the situation but felt that there was probably no better method but agreed that the situation should be watched. It was also agreed that the -Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk would review the table lay-out plan with Queen's Hotel for the next Supper Meeting.

2. The Clerk reported that the new Banner is now hanging in St. Andrews Kirk along with the other Banners of the Nine Incorporated Trades. Messrs. J. & J. Gray who had been good enough to transport the Craft Chairs and Banners to the various functions for a number of years have indicated that they are quite pleased to uplift the Banner from St. Andrews Kirk and take it to the various function places but that they are no_ happy that it should be left to them to remove the Banner its siting in the Church. and the Clerk felt that some other party would have to be held responsible. Immediate Past Deacon F Gordon Allan explained at length to the Meeting the arrangements which had been so carefully made for the hanging of Banners and that it had been agreed that the old Banner Craft should be hung in the Church. This Banner had been so hung originally but the Chaplain to the. Nine Incorporated Trades did not like the old Banner and it was at his request that the old Banner had been removed from the siting in the Kirk and the new Banner hung instead. After the Committee were advised fully as to all that had transpired it was the unanimous feeling of the Committee that the new Banner was at risk in being continually removed and replaced in its siting in the Kirk and that the proper Banner to be hung in the Kirk was, in fact, the old Banner and the Meeting gave Past Deacon Allan its full approval for him to make arrangements to have the old Banner re-hung and the new Banner will be kept with the Craft Chairs for use at Craft functions.

Apologies for absence were intimated from immediate-Past Deacon F Gordon Allan and Messers Murray Wood and Alastair Scott
Minutes

The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on 3rd November 1981 were read and approved.

Arising from the Minutes the Clerk reported that the holding of £500 8½% Treasury Stock 1982 had been repaid at par on 15th January 1982 and the redemption proceeds were invested into 6¾% Funding Stock 1995.
Craft Ties

The Clerk reported that the new stock of 109 ties was now to hand for which the net cost to the Craft was £388.52 which represented a cost per tie of £3.27, there were nine ties out of the old stock still left. After deliberation the Committee resolved to have the selling price of the Craft Ties fixed at £4.50 from now on. All endeavours should be made to sell as many ties as possible at Craft Functions.

Autumn Supper and Annual Dinner

.The Clerk reported on the financial aspect of the Autumn Supper which had resulted in a good profit of around £90 but had to report that there was a net loss on the November 1981 Dinner of £166 and explained the reasons. The Committee had held the ticket cost at £8 as in the previous year and knew and expected to make a small loss but the loss had been magnified as a result of the Caledonian Pipe Band being invited (the cost of £55) and the Deacon of the Bonnetmakers and Dyers requiring overnight accommodation at the Hotel which had cost another £39. The Committee also reflected upon the high cost now of having Menu Cards printed (159 at the last Dinner) but still felt that it would be a pity to reduce our standards although we might well have alternative quotations for the next Dinner.

March 1982 Making

Three applications for admission to the Craft were on the table i.e. Dr Henry Ledbitter. Donald N Meekison and Robert A C Somerville. The Committee approved these applications.

It was hoped that there would be at least a further two if not three applications for the March Making and it was left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make suitable arrangements with the Hotel for the function and to fix the ticket price. It was agreed that there should be a Toast to the next trade in line which would be either a Toast to the Glovers or the Fleshers.
Pensions

It was reported that the pensions for 1981 had been paid and the Deacon reported that the two pensioners had been very grateful to receive the money.

The Clerk reported that there are four applications for admission on the table in respect of Ronald Singer, William F. S. Young, lain G. Gray and Henry Leadbitter and these were approved. It was felt that another two new membership be sought. It was left in the hands of the Deacon Boxmaster and Clerk to make arrangements with the Queens Hotel for the Supper and the Committee felt that the ticket price should, if at all possible be kept at not more than £8.50.

The matter of the toast list programme for the making was considered and it was decided that Gordon Laird would approach Mr. Geoffrey Drought, Deputy Director of Education at Dundee District Council to see whether he would reply to a toast to "Education".

It was left for the Clerk to approach Mr. David Smith, Procurator Fiscal to see if he will propose this toast.
Annual Dinner

The Committee considered the format of the Annual Dinner this year and felt that there should be a change away from the semi political aspects and after due consideration the Committee decided that Mr. Iain Flett, be asked to reply to a suggested toast along the lines of “History and Origins of Dundee" and that Mr. David Purdie would be approached to see if he would propose this toast. Deacon Richardson felt it would be particularly appropriate to ask Mr. Flett to reply to such a toast in view of the translations which he has carried out recently of the Seals of Cause of the Craft and in this connection the Committee noted its appreciation to Craftsman Flett for his work on behalf of the Craft. It was also proposed to approach Dr. William Jamieson to ascertain whether he would propose the toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades at the Dinner. Deacon Convenor Munro will be asked to reply and an invitation will be sent to the Deacon of the Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow to reply to the toast to "our guests".

It was also agreed that competitive quotations should be obtained for the menu cards and Gordon Laird will obtain a quotation and the Clerk will also ask Burns & Harris Ltd. to quote in view, that they have carried out the work heretofore.
