At a Special meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queen’s Hotel Dundee at 6.45 p.m. Present: Deacon David W. Richardson Boxmaster John Thomson and Members of the Craft as per the Lockit Book. Also attending: David H. Tweedie, Clerk

These gentlemen, having severally emitted the customary declaration, were accordingly admitted to Membership conform to the Minute of Admission in the Lockit Book. The Clerk was instructed to issue the Certificate of Membership on payment of the entry money and dues.
Present: lain E. F. Flett, Kenneth Malcolm, George Bisset, Gordon Laird and the Clerk. Apologies for absence were intimated from Dr. Hector Fowlie and Messrs. Kenneth Gordon, Scott C. Henderson and Dr. Ian Duncan. Welcome: The Deacon welcomed Messrs. lain Flett and George Bisset as new Committee Members. Minutes The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on 24th August 1982 were read and approved. Autumn Supper The Clerk reported on the Supper/Making held at Queens Hotel, Dundee on 29th September 1982. The function had gone extremely well; there had been a good attendance, the Speakers were excellent and the meal provided by the Hotel was also up to standard. A profit of £37.63 had been shown on the function. Pensions The Deacon reported that the Fund Court of the Nine Incorporated Trades would be held later this week and it was agreed that he would again plead for the same pensions as previous years to be paid to our two pensioners, Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Scott. Annual Dinner The Clerk reported that invitations had been sent out to Craftsmen and that arrangements had been made with the Hotel. The menu and Toast List had been prepared and, as agreed at last Committee Meeting, competitive quotations for the printing of the Menus had been obtained and through Mr. Gordon Laird, it was arranged that the Menus would be printed this year through 'Swiftprint" whose quotation for the printing was considerably less than Burns & Harris Ltd. Concern was expressed by Ex-Deacon F. Gordon Allan as to the change away from the usual printers and it was left that the meeting would look at the situation again year. Ex-Deacon Allan also felt that The Dinner should have particular press coverage this year as it away from the format of previous years and the matter was left with the Clerk.
The Clerk reported that he had made provisional bookings 'with Queen’s Hotel, Dundee for Supper/Makings to be held on 2nd March and 28th September 1983 and with Invercarse Hotel for the Annual Dinner on 23rd November 1983. The Meeting approved these dates and left it with the Clerk to confirm with the Hotels. Ex-Deacon Allan reported that he had attended the Annual Dinner of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Glasgow and had a most enjoyable evening. The Incorporation had sent their good wishes to the Bonnetmakers of Dundee. David Richardson Minute of Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held at City House 16 Overgate Dundee on Tuesday 21st December 1982 at 5.30 p.m. Present: Deacon David W, Richardson, Dr. Hector Fowlie Dr Ian Duncan, Kenneth Gordon and the Clerk. Apologies for absence were intimated from: Messers Kenneth Malcolm, George Bisset and Iain Flett Minutes The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 1st November 1982 was read and approved. Annual Dinner 1983 The Clerk reported on the Dinner held on 24th November 1982. There had been a very good attendance of 149 people and a good meal had been provided by the Hotel. It had been generally felt that the speeches at the Dinner had been of an extremely high calibre and had been well received by the whole gathering. The Clerk laid before Meeting a financial statement of the function showing a deficit of £19.60 and the Meeting felt that the situation was acceptable. Pension Application Deacon Richardson reported that the main reason for holding this Meeting was that an application had been received for a pension from a member of the Craft The Deacon explained that the situation was therefore unusual and that the whole area application would require to be explored and the Deacon explained in some detail the financial situation relating to Dr. Simpson which prompted the application. The Meeting discussed the mater in detail and felt that the Deacon should, in the first instance, make enquiries of the Deacon Convener of the Nine Trades and others as to the possibility of a pension being made to a Craftsman and if it was the situation that this might be possible, then the Deacon will establish whether Dr. Simpson has made efforts to secure help from Medical Benevolent Funds and other funds. The Deacon will report back to the Committee at next Meeting. Five applications for admission to the Craft were on the table i.e. Anthony Black, Stewart C. Clark, Thomas Fleming, Ronald G. Greig, and Robin S. Rennie. In addition, the application of Dr. Henry Leadbitter was on the table but it is believed that he cannot attend at the next Supper. The Committee approved the five applications and it was hoped that there would be one further application. It was left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make the usual arrangements with Queens Hotel for the function and to fix the ticket price. The Clerk confirmed that the new owner of the Hotel is to honour existing function bookings. It was agreed that there will be a toast to the Hammerman Craft and the Clerk is to write the Deacon, Charles W. Porter, inviting him to reply to the toast which will be proposed by a Bonnetmaker Craftsman. Pension Application Deacon Richardson reminded the Meeting of the discussions which had taken place at last Committee Meeting concerning the application for a pension received from Craftsman David Simpson and indicated that enquiries which he had subsequently made revealed that there is apparently nothing in principle in the Constitution of the Nine Trades preventing such an application being made and if the application does proceed, it will be up to the Fund Court of the Nine Trades to decide the outcome. A full discussion then followed and, bearing in mind that the Nine Trades Pensions are reconsidered on an annual basis, it was the unanimous decision of the Meeting that the application should be put to the Nine Trades for a full pension and it was left with Deacon Richardson to process the application to the Fund Court and to speak to it there, AOCB Deacon Richardson referred to the recent translations of the Seals of Cause made by Craftsman Iain Flett and the Meeting agreed that the translations to be made available, in some form., to new Members and to existing Craftsmen. The suggestion was made that the translation could be printed for distribution or alternatively, if the History. of the Craft will require to be reprinted at a reasonably early date then the translations can be incorporated into such reprinting. It was left with the Clerk to establish the stock of Craft History which are held. D W Richardson

Arising from the Minutes, Deacon Richardson reported on the Relief Pension which the Fund Court of the Nine Incorporated Trades had confirmed in respect of Dr. David Simpson and the Deacon advised the Meeting that the payments are being made quarterly by the Clerk. In relation to the recent translations of the Seals of Cause made by Craftsman Iain Flett, the Clerk reported that the present stock of Craft History stands at approximately 80. After a full discussion, the meeting gladly accepted the offer of Immediate Past Deacon F. Gordon Allan to produce copies of the translations and it was left with Past Deacon Allan to arrange for this in conjunction with Craftsman Flett. Annual Accounts The Clerk went over the Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1983 and reported a small surplus arising for the year. In particular, it was pleasing to note that the functions had been run at a surplus. The Clerk intimated that the Accounts were now being sent to Mr. W. A. Findlay for audit.
The usual arrangements were made and the Committee had in mind suggested nominations for Committee Membership to take the place of the four members of the Committee who will retire. The Clerk reported that there are five applications for admission on the table in respect of Robert Morris Parr, lain R. Young, Thomas Fleming, Stewart C. Clark and Dr. Henry Leadbitter. It was felt that another new member be sought and it was left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make arrangements with the ticket price should, more than £9. The matter of the Toast List Programme for the Supper was considered and it was decided that-the Deacon would ask Craftsman Hamish Laurie to propose the Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades.

The Accounts of the Craft for the year to 30th June 1983 an Abstract of which had been circulated to Members prior to the Meeting were submitted for approval. Mr. W. A. Findlay, one of the Honorary Auditors, spoke about the Accounts and the Accounts were unanimously approved. Election of Office Bearers (a) Deacon On the motion of Deacon David W. Richardson, Mr. John Thomson was unanimously elected Deacon of the Craft for the ensuing year. (b) Boxmaster On the motion of the Deacon, Mr. Scott C. Henderson was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. (c) Clerk - Mr. D. H. Tweedie was unanimously elected Clerk to the Craft for the ensuing year. (d)The Committee The following Craftsmen were appointed: Members of the Committee to hold Office for two years:- William Kydd, Jerome Edgar, Sandy Robbie and James I. Merry. (e) Honorary Auditors - Messrs. Gordon Lowden and W. A. Findlay were reappointed Honorary Auditors for the ensuing year.

Arising from the Minutes it was arranged that the Clerk will ascertain from Past Deacon Allan as to the position relating the copies of the translations of the Seals of Cause which he was to (have) arranged.
The Clerk reported that there are on the table five applications. for admission to the Craft i.e. Andrew G. Henderson, James S G Miller, Gordon Small, Harry Terrell and James Irons. In addition an application is expected by Mr. Christopher Gillan proposed by Craftsman Alex. G Robbie. The Committee agreed to process these applications at the Making. It was left in the hands of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make the usual arrangements with the Queens Hotel for the function and that the ticket cost should be held it at all possible at not more than £9.
