CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES AND VISITORS

In Forensics today (9/24/09), we had Mr. Ron DiGiovanni from the ACPD Intelligence Unit. He has had 30+ years on the job in AC and over the years has been assigned to many different units. Mr. DiGiovanni spoke of the CSI effect (How CSI is now affecting jury views) and then subsequent decisions making it harder for law enforcement to make a case. He also spoke of crime scenes - primary, secondary and the effect of cameras today. For example, how security camera’s helped narrow down what happened in the recent Yale case.
In honor of "Read for the Record" day, Mrs. Linda L. Spengler's Child Development Classes read to the Primary School's Kindergarten Classes on October 8, 2009 with the help of Mrs. Vicari-Fulton and her library aides.  "Read for the Record" day was an effort to get 1,000,000 children across the United States to read Eric Carle's, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  The program was initiated by "Who's in Charge: Jumpstart", one of the nation's leading nonprofit organizations in the field of early childhood development.  The kindergartners had fun listening to the story and crafting caterpillars and butterflies.  Ms. Vicari-Fulton's library aides were responsible for putting together the caterpillar kits!

The following topics were covered in the four-day workshop: Examination of trace evidence including hair, fibers, pollen; Blood spatter analysis; Determination of time of death using insects and rigor, algor and livor mortis; DNA fingerprinting; Fingerprinting; Impression evidence (tire, foot, dental and tool); Bone analysis; Ballistics; Soil and sand analysis; and Glass evidence.

SCHOOL VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK

School Violence Awareness week was recognized at OCHS with special training for staff during an extended faculty meeting. The prior year’s discipline report was reviewed. Sergeant Dave Hall of the Community Police gave a PowerPoint presentation discussing crisis response and held a question and answer session. Along with our monthly fire drills, a bus evacuation drill and a Level I lockdown drill was also held

GUIDANCE NEWS

Approximately 230 people were in attendance at junior college parent night with about 120 families represented.  Groups rotated through three 24 minute seminars - #1 Testing for College Admissions and the Student’s Personal Credentials, #2 Using the Internet to Assist in the College Search Process and Finding the Right College, #3 Admissions Terminology, Trends and Visiting College Campuses.  In the spring we will host another edition and discuss “How colleges evaluate a candidate” and “How to pay for college”.

At this time, over 30 college representatives have been to OCHS since school started. They have been meeting with Juniors and Seniors to discuss their respective colleges and the application procedures. The counselors have processed over 150 applications.
Now that interims have been posted the counselors have begun to meet with their freshman to review grades and check on their transition to high school.
