How can I monitor these issues In order to keep up-to-date with industry issues, and events and issues within your workplace Attend all meetings you are required to attend – meetings are often called at work, but all too often staff elect deliberately not to attend and consequently miss out on vital information Read the memos – many workplaces will use memos to notify staff of emerging or ongoing issues, and again, many staff ignore these at their peril if you receive a memo/e- mail … read it Monitor the media – keep an eye on the media, and make it your business to read, listen and watch as the case maybe this often provides an indicator of an emerging local, current concern Fine-tune your own personal radar – whenever you hear or see anything, anywhere relating to any aspect of the industry, focus on it fora moment to identify whether or not you should spend more time monitoring, following up or questioning Form your own informed opinion – discuss and debate issues with colleagues and management note discuss and debate does not mean argue with a view to understanding the total picture so you can develop your own views Talk to supervisors and management – to identify what they see as issues affecting the industry and the venue Talk to customers – to identify what they regard as issues for the industry as they impact on users Read the newsletters and updates from industry groups and government agencies – these are another prime source to identify industry issues.
