475. MARTINELLI: Memorial Album. Private three-record set, of which only 100 copies were made (according to the labels). Recordings date from 1912 (aria from Manon Lescaut; his only recording on cylinder) through 1920's/30's arias & songs (mostly off the air, but including songs in Russian, Spanish & Hungarian) and all the way to 1968 (the year before his death). The last two sides, dating from 1958-68, are mostly private recordings Martinelli made for himself, plus his 1967 Seattle opera return as the Emperor in Turandot (at age 81). Includes a beautiful 28-page booklet with many photos (formal and informal) and detailed notes by Edward J. Smith. [The records do not seem to be worn, but clearly were pressed by the same people as Smith's "Golden Age of Opera" EJS issues: that is, pretty much 3rd-rate. The booklet, however, is beautifully done.] Celebrity CEL-500(3). B+(varies from B to A--; see preceding note) 100.00

480. MATTHEWS: (Inez): Schubert - Die Schone Mullerin; Winterreise. Lowell Farr, piano. [Very obscure issue (first time I've seen it) and quirky too: apparently unable to fit all of Die Schone Mullerin happily on one 12-inch LP, it is completed on a 7-inch LP (!) as the third disc in the early oversized album; records are scratchy but oddly do not seem badly worn, so with tick-reducing hardware or software the strongly recorded sound would probably be very listenable] Period SPL-713/14(3).
