Assignment On Computer Fundamentals

A description of the purpose of different types of computer network.

  • PAN (Personal Area Network): is a computer network formed around a person. It usually includes a computer, a mobile device or a personal digital assistant. PANs can be used to establish communication between these personal devices to connect to digital networks and the Internet.
  • Local Area Network (LAN): This is a group of computers and devices connected in a limited area such as schools, laboratories, homes, and office buildings. It is a very useful network for sharing resources such as files, printers, games and other applications. The simplest type of LAN is to connect computers and printers to someone's home or office. Usually, the local area network will be used as a type of transmission medium. It is a network made up of less than 5,000 devices connected together in several buildings.
  • WAN (Wide Area Network): is another important computer network that spans a large geographical area. A WAN system can be a connection of a local area network to other local area networks using telephone lines and radio waves. It is mainly limited to one business or organization.
  • MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): includes a computer network across an entire city, university campus, or small area. This type of network is larger than a local area network, which is mostly confined to a single building or location. Depending on the configuration type, this type of network can cover an area from a few kilometers to several tens of kilometers.

A description of the hardware, software and transmission media used in computer networks.

  • The components of a computer network are the main components required for the installation of software. Some of the important network components are network cards, switches, cables, hubs, routers, and modems. Depending on the type of network we need to install, some network components may also be removed. For example, wireless networks do not require cables.

  • Network software includes a wide range of software used to design, implement, operate, and monitor computer networks. Traditional networks are hardware-based with built-in software. With the advent of Software - Defined Networking (SDN), software was decoupled from the hardware, making it more adaptable to the ever-changing nature of computer networks.

  • Transmission media are classified into two types, namely wired media and wireless media. The media characteristics of a wired carrier are more important, but in a wireless carrier, the signal characteristics are important.
