We may share and discuss these in a future session so please ensure you give some thought as to “Why?” not just “What?”!

From the Science Programmes of Study: Key Stages 1 and 2 (also available at: http://bit.ly/KS3POS2013 ) please read 3 & 4. What are the key messages suggested in this introduction to the latest Programme Of Study? Are there any points that you feel are particularly relevant to you as a trainee Primary Teacher, chose two and explain why below?

Self-Study Session – Subject Knowledge Development

Electricity

Access the BBC Bitesize website and access the Key Stage 3 Electricity content – Complete the reading, activity and tests for both “Static Electricity” and “Electric Current And Potential Difference”, there are also a good number of video clips in the Classroom Resources section which you can then use to help develop further insights into the topic if necessary. This is obviously above the level which you are expected to teach:

Now look at the Bitesize sections on Electricity at KS1 and KS2… The new Programme of Study for KS1 and KS2 doesn’t actually mention Electricity until Years 4 & 6…

KS2 Bitesize Electricity: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zj44jxs

Firstly, why might there be mention of electricity on the Bitesize website at KS1?

Secondly, the KS2 Bitesize Electricity resources are mainly short videos – how might you make best use of these in a lesson, what else could you do to make this topic more interesting?

Lastly, in one sentence, how would you describe electricity to a Year 4 pupil?

Electricity is:

Hopefully this will reinforce your basic understanding of the topic following your Workshop session on Electricity. Please make sure that you file any notes from the workshop with this section of your science Handbook.

Workshop: Subject Knowledge Development

Electricity

This session explores the nature and properties of electricity and simple electrical circuits. Subject and pedagogical knowledge will be developed through a variety of practical activities and simple problem solving with electrical circuits. Some common misconceptions about electricity will be addressed. (This topic may be referred to in the Design and Technology session).

FieldTrip: Subject Knowledge Development

Fieldwork Session

This session provides you with a range of ideas and approaches to studying the biological sciences outside, no matter where you are! You will shown how to access the great resources available from various online agencies including Opal / WWT / FSC etc and undertake a simple ecological survey in a nearby park, considering afterwards how you might develop this further with the children in your classes.
