Folio cloth with gilt titles on front cover. 71pp. + 22pp. supplement of various subjects. An interesting & useful atlas of this county which is on the Kansas line north of Garfield County. The Chisholm Trail passed through Grant Co.. Contents include, beside maps of individual townships of the county, a double-page map of the State of Oklahoma, an Outline Map of Grant County, & double-page maps of the U.S. & the world. This atlas includes a 4pp. Patrons' Reference Directory, 2pp. of ads, & 5pp. of Illustrations (mainly portraits, but with some candid snapshots, and houses, farms, businesses) to which there is also an index. Twenty-four townships & fifteen towns are platted (including the county seat of Medford), some of the latter very small, of course. Six of the townships have 60 square miles in them as opposed to 36 sq miles. Three railroads & four rail lines crossed through the county. Old plat books are flat-out fun to have & very important for local research. Condition of this volume is vg. Wear to top/bottom of spine & cover corners; very light soiling to boards. Hinges are fortunately made of fabric. The back hinge is pulled from the staples of the binding, but is still very stable because of the nice condition of the cloth & is in little danger of further pulling unless abused. The upper left corner of the tip-in sheet is actully glued 2" down & 1 1/4" out from the binding, but does not cover up any printing on t-p. Else vg+ in pc dj with couple of edge tears. Unusual! Please note the flaw to the following signatures: Green inscribed the book to "my good friend and fellow OHS (Okla Hist Soc) Board Member (name given) -- it is an 8 line inscription. On the verse the same member receives an inscription from a member of the Hitch family. However, a presumably later owner of the book (there is a later fos on the ffep, along with a "book sale" stamp) unfortunately blacked out the addressee on the Hitch presentation. You can still make it out, barely. That "blackout" bled through to the recto, defacing Green's signature. That said, (and what can I say about book owners that do such things) still an otherwise fine copy of a modern classic of ranching in the Oklahoma Panhandle, in lightly rubbed dj. There is a brief handwritten note by author on the latter. From the dj: "This book unfolds a dramatic account of the struggles involved in the acquisition of the Pacific Northwest. Focus is placed on pioneer explorations, engineering projects, military establishments." Most of the subject matter appears to be in & around Puget Sound. The authors have created a character named Boilerplate, who looks like a WWI Doughboy made out of a cylinder boiler with arms, legs, & head with WWI helmet. They photo-shopped him into real photos & prints/posters of historical events (and theatrical events) from the late 19th Century into the early 20th Century, & have written a text explaining the real history, interwoven with Boilerplate's imagined place in that history. Thoroughly illustrated in color & b/w with vintage photos (including Boilerplate!), maps, prints, etc.. Example: full page poster in color from a fictitious Jack London play, "Marvel of the Klondike" showing Boilerplate wrestling with a bear in a saloon, captioned, "The Metal Man Triumphs Over An Enormous Grizzly."
