Another sample: "But if I think of women I have caressed, I hate this white brittleness and am depressed. In a trading post called Denver, I dealt myself four aces--". 1337. Harman, S. W. HELL ON THE BORDER He Hanged Eighty-Eight Men (Signed Association). Fort Smith: Phoenix Pub. Co, (and Fort Smith Elevator, Composition, Fort Smith), 1898. First Edition. Book. 1st printing. Bound in cloth, most likely soon after publication. The original green paper covers were removed when bound & are therefore not present. Decorated title label (a little worn & browned) on spine. 720pp. Illust. This copy was a gift from the famous Western historian, E. A. Brininstool. In ink on the ffep is written, "L. H. Spragle from my ole' pard E. A. Brininstool Los Angeles Calif. Nov/1918." The copy is not signed, however, by Brininstool. One of the rarest & most sought of all outlaw & law enforcement books, this is the story of Judge Isaac C. Parker's Fort Smith federal court which served Indian Territory for many years. This book is a primary source for countless books on territorial outlaws & lawmen. Very good condition, although the upper corner of the text block was bumped resulting in compression bending across the corner on each page -- typical for a bumped book. The first 60pp at the upper front corner have a very tiny chip, only about 1/16". There is the occasion page elsewhere with minuscule chip. Covers vg, if somewhat worn at head & toe of spine, & at the fore corners. Your bookseller had the hinges professionally redone. This is a tight, eminently usable copy. All of text is in fine reading condition with the rebind, but the prelims, frontispiece., & title page are ugly. Nevertheless, a scarce, if mismatched set loaded with loads of useful information.
