THE BREAKTHROUGHS OF CYDONIA. n.p. : Privately Printed, 1991. First Edition. Book. This Richard C. Hoagland booklet about the planet Mars, THE BREAKTHROUGHS OF CYDONIA. This is the First (and only?) Edition thus, printed April 16, 1991, so stated. Hoagland is associated with several publications dealing with purported structures built on Mars, centered on the "Face" on Mars in the Cydonia region, and other space subjects of interest. Author Hoagland describes briefly the "NASA-Lewis Research Center television production" that was suddenly pulled. And etc.. Thirty-three (33) numbered pages plus copyright page. The Introduction summarizes the "Furor over 'Hoagland's Mars.'" There are nine (9) pages of photos and diagrams/drawings, and one (1) page of a Table, "Space Power Generator Test." Printed on cheap paper with melon-colored covers (and thus probably copies did not survive well) which are slightly faded, this 8 1/4 " x 10 3/4" booklet is in very good used condition. Minor creasing, but no abrasions. Two very short edge tears to the front cover. No chips. The name of a previous owner is at the top of the front cover. We locate no copies available on internet sites -- the last one was many years ago -- and no copies in world libraries. Superlatively rare. STATEMENT OF JOHN F HOBBS TELLING HIS EXPERIENCES AS COWBOY, TEXAS RANGER AND INDIAN FIGHTER. Spokane: n.p., 1952. Manuscript. Handwritten. Original handwritten manuscript staple-bound in plain wraps, 7 ½" x 10 ½", with writer's title & statement written on the cover. Single-sided 39pp + 5pp addenda & 1 sheet of notes, related to bookman & historian Jerome Peltier & signed by Hobbs 12/11/52. Hobbs left his Massachusetts home in 1883 at 15 years old & went to Texas. He learned to be a cowboy for a while NW of El Paso (brief description of El Paso & getting "an outfit."). He believed it was the Circle R he worked for. Hobbs then joined the army ("they got around (my age) by giving my age as 21"). Hobbs doesn't identify his unit, but relates chasing rustlers, including Mexican Rurales, while on detached service. In 1885 he went to Fort Apache & Fort Huachuka (sic). He relates commonly known info about the search for Geronimo. In 1889 spent a few months with the Texas Rangers ("not full time"). This early material comprises the first 17pp. Hobbs re-enlisted in the army 2/16/89 at David's Is., NY, was sent to California and "was now in Co. H. -- 1st U. S. Infantry." The balance of his account describes him & his regiment being sent to Pine Ridge Agency in Dakota Territory & what happened there. His narrative relates the killing of Sitting Bull nearby. Hobbs was assigned to detached service with "'K' troop of the 7th Cavalry and in that way I was right in the thick of the trouble." He was with the detail to "intercept Big Foot's band at Paradise Valley." His feelings about doing that during extremely cold weather were not kindly toward the Indians, to say the least. What follows, briefly, but clearly told, is his eye-witness account of the massacre at Wounded Knee (including how he remembered it started) & its aftermath (burial, etc.) . "K" troop was on the front line in front of Big Foot's encampment. "In the excitement everyone rode down Indians and shot them like chickens." The last few pages relate military politics & his decision to leave the army in 1892. Addenda pps mention Sonora, Gen'l Miles, a quartermaster sargeant's (sic) job, & includes a complimentary description of Colonel (Pecos Bill) William Shafter (Hobbs gives middle initial "P", but it's "R."), who he says signed his discharge papers. Your bookseller has had this manuscript for a few years, and finally did genealogical research on Hobbs. His "Application For Headstone Or Marker" gives correct dates of his birth & death, & indicates his regiment/unit for his nearly 3 years with the 1st. While his Arizona army days & his brief Texas Ranger days have not been documented by your bookseller, the internal consistency of the manuscript, including citations of names, dates, & places, have satisfied this bookseller that Hobbs did what he said he did. Nor does he embellish as a fabricator would. For example, when describing white & black figs growing "near the base of the mountains on the way to Sonora," he says, "I made this trip after the Indian campaign, not during that time." Nor does Hobbs appear to have had a financial motive for relating his memoir. Historian Peltier was experienced in recording the accounts of old time frontiersmen & soldiers in their twilight years. Hobbs died 10/20/1954 & is buried in Spokane. If not an extended memoir of the Indian Wars, Hobbs' account nevertheless speaks with an authenticity having the power to place the reader right there on the frontier alongside of him.
