OMAHA BEE. EXTRA. Saturday, July 2, 1881. Omaha Bee, 1881. First Thus. Book. One sheet broadside, 7" x 11 3/8", on newsprint of the period. Under the masthead, "EXTRA", & date, "ASSASSINATION. President Garfield Shot in the Baltimore and Potomac Depot at Washington." "The Assassin a Disappointed Office Seeker Name Doherty". "Intense Excitement and Conflicting Rumors." Then follows printed bulletins & dispatches beginning at 8am & continuing until noon, & finally "Later - The president cannot recover." Of course, the President lingered long, creating what a docent at his memorial monument in Cleveland called the first big modern media event. One vertical fold down the center. No chips. With the following exception, it is in very good condition with tiny wrinkles & short edge tear. The exception is that there is a long tear running in from the left edge across the top of the word, "Assassination" & up through "Extra" to the bottom of the masthead. However, when properly fitted, it is barely seen. I have chosen not to use even the fine archival tape at my disposal to close the tear, but will do so upon request of buyer. Rare. July 2,1881 Very Good+. No Binding. (#0611110) $65.61
