Six accompanying envelopes, four of them illustrated in same, with Powell's Kalispell return address on five of them. Five of the letters are 8 1/2" x 11"; one is on 9" x 12" sketch pad sheet with spiral perforations at top. These attractive letters/envelopes are correspondence to a noted NW book dealer & collector, 1971-72. Subjects are Indians: Beecher Island fight, "headchief and young mule", "Plight of the 'Human Beings' (Cheyenne) after escape from Fort Dodge", "horse stealing party", "war party of Blackfoot (sic) killed buy (sic) crows in 1872", magpie on "Unknown 7th Cavalry" marker ("..what the birds might know..")". A couple of individual vignettes accompany the more full scale sketches. A couple of sketches are in pencil & uncolored. Although done in Powell's early career when he was 17-18 years old, these illustrations are splendid, indeed. Powell is the son of the fine Western artists, Ace Powell & Nancy Powell McLaughlin. E. Dudley (1945) on front paste down. One of the most remarkable lawyers to practice law in the West & certainly in Oklahoma, & a champion read! From the title page: "The life story of the man who defended 343 persons charged with murder. The record shows 303 acquittals and the only client to hear the death sentence pronounced was saved by Presidential clemency." I believe it is accurate to say that the authorship & publication of the book was in dispute, & the reasons are too elaborate to present in this space. This copy vg. Some sort of a gift presentation dated Dec. 9, 1944, has been marked over with a black crayon. Pencil note at inscriptions says "see page 57". The inscription is very likely referring to someone on that page. Part of inscription says, "able assistant". Otherwise this copy is clean & tight. There is some fading to the covers, but the fading to the backstrip is much less than usually found on these books. Very scarce. No dj (I have never seen a dj for this book). Good. Hardcover.
