Churchill And The Jews

by Martin Gilbert

Read by Derek Pugh (1 Cd)

Martin Gilbert explores a fascinating new aspect of the life and work of Winston Churchill and his relationship with the Jews during more than fifty years and sheds new light on his thoughts and decisions. Churchill's father Randolph was berated by associates because of his friendship with individual Jews. Winston Churchill would take this friendship further into the public domain and was a supporter of the Balfour Declaration promising a restoration of the Land of Israel to it's ancient inhabitants the Jews. Churchill was an early opponent of Hitler and he based his opposition mainly on his hatred of the racist and anti-semitic features of Nazism. This is clear from the fact that Churchill admired Mussolini in the 1920s, he found Hitler to be a monster and he was prescient in his view that Hitler's rule would lead to mass killing and suppression of the Jews. Churchill supported efforts to save Jews in the Second World War. After the war, in the wake of the Lehi and Irgun Jewish underground attacks on the British forces in Palestine, Churchill still remained a supporter of Zionism and supported recognition of Israel and opposed Nasser.

Diary Of A Juvenile Delinquent

by Steven Berkoff

Read by Ruth Hill (1 Cd)

This book is written in two parts - 1). As a child 2). Teenage years 3). The age of work and 4). Leaving home. Each section describes graphically different events in Steven Berkoff's young life. This is a memoir of a misspent youth. He looks back at a childhood with a caring mother and a frequently absent father. He resents his father's neglect of him, not having a barmitzvah and his complete lack of encouragement. Steven transformed from a keen, smartly turned out grammar schoolboy into a teenager eager to be with the 'in crowd'. A brief stay in a Borstal for bicycle theft is honestly described. High on hormones Steven was over-keen to indulge in sexual experiences and confesses to being an uncommitted teenage father. Leaving school at 16 Steven embarked on a series of short-term jobs and foreign travel linked to menswear. His successful application to drama school to fulfil his longing to become an actor ends the final section.
