The Escuela superior militar is four years, culminating in a baccalaureate equivalent (his is science, engineering). There is no mid-career equivalent, senior officers are sent to the US. There is no national gendarmerie. The army’s main concern is counter-insurgency along the border with Columbia, fighting FARC guerrillas. They do work with anti-narcotics police, but run their own intelligence services, including plain-clothes in villages along the border. They run their own intelligence school, teaching techniques to work with the civilian population.
