Panoramic views of Montenegro’s stunning coastline on the Adriatic Sea, complete with rugged cliffs falling steeply to the water far below, as well as calls at two picturesque coastal resorts, the port of Kotor itself and the nearby Budva, await you on this relaxing half-day excursion. Starting out from the port of Kotor – whose sheltered position on the Gulf of Kotor gave rise to strong historical ties with Venice, as evidenced by the many the Venetian-style houses in the town – you will make your way to the nearby resort of Budva on the so-called “Budvanska Rivijera”. A vast body of archaeological and documentary evidence is available to prove that Budva is one of the oldest urban settlements on the Adriatic coast, having been founded in the 5th century B.C.. You will have some free time to explore the old city walls or citadel in Budva’s appealing historical quarter at your own pace, or perhaps just amble through the narrow streets with their many churches, inviting cafés and a slew of great souvenir shops. The short return drive to Kotor and your ship will then give you a chance to relax and enjoy more lovely views of Montenegro’s countryside.

KTR03 – NJEGUSI: THE ORIGIN OF MONTENEGRO

Duration: approx. 5 hours

Take a break from the ship and join this historical discovery tour of beautiful Montenegro, which begins with a short coach drive from Kotor to Njeguši, a tiny village situated on the slopes of Mount Lovćen in the national park of the same name. As the birthplace of the famous Petrović-Njegoš dynasty – which ruled the country from 1696 to 1918 – the village is of immense importance for Montenegro. Nowadays, pretty little Njeguši is particularly noted for its traditional production of the delicious njeguški sir, a ricotta-like cheese, and the equally tasty njeguški pršut, a high-quality type of air-dried ham. A stop will be made to give you a chance to try some of these superb local specialities, which are sure to tantalise your taste buds in the best possible way. The tour then continues by coach to the town of Cetinje, the old royal capital of Montenegro that was founded in the 15th century. Due to its importance to the heritage of Montenegro, it still bears the venerable title of “Montenegro’s honorary capital”. The region is also home to the beautiful Petrović Castle and other sites of key cultural and historical importance. On your return route to Kotor from Cetinje via Budva, a photo stop will be made at a spot that affords panoramic views of the Montenegrin coastline and the island city of Sveti Stefan, the Villa Miločer and the lovely resort of Budva.
