This panoramic tour will give you an excellent overview of Kiel, your port of call, as well as the surrounding countryside. Thanks to its advantageous coastal location on the Baltic Sea, the beautiful city of Kiel – the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein – is characterised by a rich maritime and naval tradition that it still maintains to this day. Kiel enjoys an international reputation as the venue of several important sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week – the world’s biggest sailing competition. In fact, the first-class conditions at sea and meticulous organisation on land have lent Kiel the title of “the world’s unofficial sailing capital”, especially since the city hosted the Olympic sailing competitions in 1936 and 1972. One of these was held in the Kiel suburb of Schilksee, which is naturally on the itinerary. The many little sailing boats and the unique architecture of Schilksee are a living testament to the colourful event. The tour of the city will also take you to see the famous early 20th-century town hall, the majestic Kiel Fjord, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, and the impressive Kiel Canal, which both connects the North and Baltic Seas and is the world's busiest artificial waterway. Your return to the pier and your ship marks the end of this scenic excursion.

Please note: this tour is only for guests in transit in the port of Kiel. This tour is not available on following calls: 21.06.2014 + 28.06.2014.
KIRKWALL (Scotland, United Kingdom)
Kirkwall is the largest town and the capital of the Orkney Islands, which lie off the coast of northern Scotland. The name of the town is a corruption of the old Norse name of Kirkjuvagr, which means church bay. The settlement was first mentioned as early as 1046. The town offers many attractions, including St. Magnus Cathedral, the ruins of the former Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces as well as two museums.
KWL01 ― KIRKWALL WALKING TOUR

Duration: approx. 2.5 hours

This walking tour offers an opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating architectural sites on the Orkney Isles on foot. Starting at the pontoon, a leisurely stroll will take you through the historical old town of Kirkwall, the Viking capital of the Orkney Islands. The magnificent 12th-century, red sandstone cathedral of St. Magnus, known locally as the “Light of the North”, is the first stop on the tour. Nearby there are many narrow, winding streets and lanes, which have hardly altered at all over the centuries. Afterwards, the tour continues to the ruined Bishop’s Palace and then to the Earl’s Palace, one of Scotland’s most elegant Renaissance buildings. The tour concludes at Tankerness House Gardens, where you will have time to visit the museum or take a stroll around the town before returning to the ship.

Please note : limited number of guides in languages other than English. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in English only. On special events the visit to the Cathedral might be cancelled. Conservative attire is recommended for visiting sites of religious importance. KWL02 ― ORKNEY SIGHTSEEING TOUR

Duration: approx. 3 hours 15 minutes

Experience a haven of wildlife, breathtaking panoramas and fascinating history during this scenic island exploration. On leaving Kirkwall, you will head north via Finstown and the Parish of Evie to then enjoy stunning views across Eynhallow Sound to the island of Rousay. Skirting the nearby Birsay Moors RSPB Reserve (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), the next stop is the sandy beach at Birsay Bay with views of the imposing cliffs at Marwick head and, if you are lucky, may even spot some of the seals in the bay! Travelling inland we make our way to the heart of Neolithic Orkney, which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The tour concludes by taking you along the beautiful coastline of the historical bay of Scapa Flow while your guide relates the sort of dramatic wartime stories that have made this one of the best known stretches of water in the world. You will then return to Kirkwall and your ship.

Please note : limited number of guides in languages other than English. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in English only.
