IV. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

1. Students’ Union

This student organization consists of a President, Vice-President Internal, Vice-President Finance, 12 room representatives and their alternates. With the assistance of the staff advisor, Mr. Huculak, this group is responsible for planning and conducting a wide range of student activities and projects. The President and Vice-President Internal are grade 12 students. The Vice-President Finance is a grade 11 student. These three positions are filled by election in the spring. The room representatives and alternates are elected by their Social Studies classes in mid-September.
2. Clubs and Activities

Major effort is made by staff members, the Students’ Union, and individual students to provide many interesting and diverse opportunities for all students. Students interested in starting a new club or activity should contact Mr. Huculak.



V. STUDENT AWARDS
1. Old Scona Awards

Academic achievement and service to the school and community is recognized at an Awards Night held during October. An Awards Board composed of students and staff members is responsible for the organization and operation of the awards program at Old Scona. The Awards Policy is a product of this Board, but is subject to the approval of the staff and administration.


1.1 Academic Awards

(a) First Class Honours Awards:

(i) academic average of 89.5% - 100% in at least 25 credits taken at Old Scona during the current school year

(ii) courses comprising the 25 credits must be in courses acknowledged by the Awards Board.

(iii) no mark less than 50% in the program

(b) Honours Awards:

(i) academic average of 79.5% - 89.4% in at least 25 credits taken at Old Scona during the current school year

(ii) courses comprising the 25 credits must be in courses acknowledged by the Awards Board



  1. no mark less than 50% in your program

Important Considerations

25 or possibly 26 credits will be used to determine the Academic Awards. A minimum of 20 credits must be chosen from the Group A subjects and one 5 credit, two 3 credit or a composite of 1 credit and 3 credit subjects to make 5 credits may be chosen from Group B subjects. English must be considered.

It is acceptable to compute your average from Group A subjects only.

Awards are based on final marks. In all diploma subjects, awards will be based on the blended average of the school awarded mark and the diploma exam mark.

  1. Top Academic Student Award:

This award is given to the student, at each grade level, who achieves the highest average according to the above-listed criteria.

(d) Valedictorian

This honour will be conferred to the Grade 12 student who is the top academic student according to the above criteria based on the third term report card. In the event of a tie of two or more students, the honour will be extended to all candidates who have earned the highest academic average as calculated above.

(e) Subject Awards:

Recognition of the highest achievement in the following subject areas:


  • English Language Arts 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1

  • Mathematics 10 C, 20-1, 30-1 and 31

1.0 Service Awards

(i) The Awards Board shall combine the recommendations from various areas of service and/or meritorious contribution to determine awarding of service awards. Any consideration for an award shall be based on service and/or contributions made since the last award.

(ii) Nominations of Service Awards will be initiated by club advisors, teachers and/or Students’ Union on the merits of each nominated person will be discussed by the Awards Board to decide final awards.

(iii) Outstanding and exceptional contribution in the following areas will be considered:



  • leadership

  • innovation

  • sense of responsibility

  • initiative

  • concern for others

(iv) The staff and/or administration may recommend additions or deletions to the primary list of award winners submitted by the Awards Board.

Note: Extra-curricular activities are eligible for service awards. Any activity that results in course credit is excluded.


1.1 Outstanding Citizen Award

This award recognizes outstanding contributions to life at Old Scona.

(i) Candidates must have an academic average of at least 75% as calculated by the same criteria as for Honours Awards.


  1. Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of excellence in service, citizenship and social relationships.

Any student or staff member may submit nominations or applications to the Awards Board.
1.2 Lois Hole Humanitarian Award

Awarded to a student, elected by teachers, who demonstrates compassion, enthusiasm, encouragement and sincerity toward fellow students, education, school values and projects in general, with no other goal than supporting these values and those that need support.


1.3 Coca Cola Scholarship (award is under review for 2014-15)

Given to the student who demonstrates good citizenship, leadership, initiative and demonstrates responsibility and a concern for others.


1.4 Athletic Award

Awarded to the male and female graduating students who have demonstrated athletic well roundedness, strong leadership qualities, participated in several athletic activities, and demonstrated a high degree of sportsmanship and dependability.


1.5 Talib Rajwani Speech and Debate Awards

Recognizes a student who has demonstrated leadership and service to speech and debate at Old Scona.


1.6 Kinsmen Salute to Youth recognizes students who will be attending a post-secondary institution and have demonstrated outstanding achievement in community service, academics, arts or athletics.
1.7 Helping Hand Award

This award goes to the grade 10 student who exemplifies leadership, citizenship, or sportsmanship by reaching out to help others.


2.0 Academic Awards
2.1 Governor General’s Medal

The Bronze Medal for academic excellence will be awarded to the graduating student who achieves the highest average. The average includes all grade 11 and grade 12 courses as listed on the student’s official transcript of grades. It must be calculated based on final results after provincial examinations.


2.2 Old Scona Creative Writing Scholarship

It recognizes the achievement of a grade 11 or 12 student who demonstrates outstanding ability in creative writing.


2.3 Susan Green Memorial Award in Creative Writing

Recognizes the achievement of three grade 10 students who demonstrate outstanding ability in creative writing.

2.4 Edmonton Strathcona Youth Leadership Award

Awarded to a graduating student who has proven to be a leader, both academically and in least two other fields of endeavour. The recipient must: be completing their school, have an average of 80% or higher for a minimum of 25 credits, demonstrate good citizenship characteristics and contribute to school life in two or more of the following categories: student government and activities, debating and public speaking, music, theatre or visual arts and community service.


3. Post-Secondary Scholarship Opportunities

Many post-secondary scholarships are advertised in the Daily Bulletin or check SchoolZone, under Resources. For specific questions or concerns, please contact the assistant principal.




    1. Provincial Awards




    1. Alexander Rutherford Scholarship: was established to recognize and reward exceptional academic achievement at the senior high school level and to encourage students to continue their studies. Value: Up to $2,500.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident and an Alberta resident; and plan to enroll or be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program or apprenticeship program

Placement of Courses in Master Schedule Above

Courses are scheduled throughout Blocks 1 to 10. A course assigned to a specific block (e.g. Block 2) will be taught in each cell Block 2 appears.

Our priority is to schedule classes between 8:00 to 3:30.

Art is offered in Blocks 10 and 12. Jazz Band is offered only on Wednesday until 5:33 (not on Monday in block 12). Choral is offered only on Tuesday until 5:33 (not on Thursday in block 11.



Constitution of the

Students’ Union of Old Scona Academic

ARTICLE I

Name

The name of this association shall be the Students’ Union of Old Scona Academic.


ARTICLE II

Membership in the Students’ Union Council

The active members of the Students’ Union shall consist of all students of Old Scona Academic who are registered for the current year and who have paid the Students’ Union fee ($15.00).


ARTICLE III

Objectives

There shall be a council of students to govern the Students’ Union. This body shall be called the Students’ Union Council. The objectives of the Students’ Union Council are:



  1. To coordinate and administer all the student co-curricular activities which are sponsored by Old Scona Academic.

  2. To sponsor a co-curricular program that will provide all students with an opportunity to develop desirable traits of personality, character, and to maintain a standard of physical well being.


ARTICLE IV

Student Council

  1. Composition

(a) The Students’ Union Council shall be composed of

(i) an elected executive.

(ii) elected room representatives.


  1. a secretary elected by the Students’ Union Council.

  2. A communication officer elected by the Students’ Union Council

  3. any other positions assigned by the Students’ Union Council during the course of the year.

  1. Powers

Subject to ratification by the Principal, the Student Council shall be empowered:

(a) To act as the Legislative and administrative body for the Students’ Union.

(b) To approve or disapprove of the formation, the continuance, or the discontinuance of any student organization sponsored by, at, or under the name of the school, subsequent to approval by the Faculty.

(c) To approve the budget of each student organization sponsoring, overseeing or supervising a co-curricular activity at, or under the name of the school irrespective of whether a financial grant is requested or not.

(d) To amend the Constitution of the Students’ Union.

3. Organization



(a) The Students’ Union Council shall be composed of an Executive and Room Representatives.

  1. Room Representatives

(b) Subject to ratification by the Principal, the Students’ Union is empowered thusly:

  1. To establish and publish agendas for meetings of the Students’ Union.

  2. In an emergency or outstanding situation, to authorize, cancel or postpone any co-curricular activity of any student organization.

  3. In an emergency or outstanding situation, to authorize an expenditure for Student Council activities not in excess of one hundred dollars ($100).


ARTICLE V

Election of Room Representatives

  1. A Room Representative shall be elected from each Social Studies class by students registered in those classes.

  2. Students may run only for Room Representative if they are free to attend the Students’ Union Council lunch meetings. The day on which the weekly meetings shall occur will be publicized before Room Representative elections.

  3. The election shall be supervised by a faculty member and shall be by secret vote. The candidate with the most votes shall become Room Representative, and the candidate with the second largest number of votes shall become the Alternate Room Representative. In the event of a tie for Room Representative or Alternate, a bi-election will be held.

  4. Alternate Room Representatives shall fulfill the duties of the Room Representatives in the event that the Room Reps are ill or unable to attend the meetings.

  5. The removal of a Room Representative is at the discretion of the SU and will occur if the Room Representative is not fulfilling his or her duties even after one warning from SU. Class satisfaction surveys regarding Room Representatives will also be administered.


ARTICLE VI

Nomination and Election of Executive Members

  1. The election of the President, Vice President Internal and Vice President Finance shall take place no later than the third week of May.

  2. The week preceding the election shall be designated as campaign week.

  3. After the candidates’ speeches are heard by the student body, the election shall be by secret ballot of all active members of the OSA Student Body in grades 10 and 11.

  4. Ballots will be counted by the school staff members.

  5. Nominations for office shall be open only during the week preceding campaign week.

  6. Nomination papers for the executive positions must be signed by the candidate and at least ten active members of the OSA student body in Grades 10 or 11. Supporting signatures must be for only one candidate for each position.

  7. Nomination papers must be turned into the Students’ Union Faculty Advisor prior to 3:26 p.m. on the last school day preceding campaign week. No late nomination papers will be accepted under any circumstances.

  8. The expenditure of any funds from all sources for electioneering on behalf of any candidate is not to exceed $15. Any issues regarding campaign expenditures must be taken to the Faculty Advisor before the election is held.

  9. Both the position of Secretary and the position of Communications Officer will be determined by a Students’ Union Council vote. Eligibility for the positions will be published by the Students’ Union Council. In the event of a competition, a vote by the Council will determine the winners.

ARTICLE VII

Eligibility of Executive Members of the Students’ Union

  1. Candidates for Executive election must be a bona fide OSA students. No slates or parties can run.

  2. The President and Vice-President Internal must be registered to enter Grade 12 at Old Scona in the year following the election.

  3. The Vice-President Finance must be registered to enter Grade 11 at Old Scona in the year following the election.

  4. Executive Members shall carry at least 20 credits during the year in which they are to hold office.

  5. Candidates must have the approval of school administration.


ARTICLE VIII

Duties of the Members of the Students' Executive

  1. The duties of the President are:

    1. To be chairman of meetings of the Students’ Union and general meetings of the Students’ Union for Students’ Union purposes.

    2. To supervise and coordinate the activities of all other Council members.

    3. To represent student concerns to the Principal.

    4. To represent the Students’ Union at any activities inside or outside the school which require such a representative.

  2. The duties of the Vice President Internal are:

  1. To carry out the duties of the President in the absence of the President.

  2. To assist in preparing agendas for the Students’ Union meetings.

  3. To coordinate, maintain, and encourage all student co-curricular activities in conjunction with Students’ Union events.

  1. The duties of the Vice President Finance are:

    1. Make available monthly statements to the Students’ Union.

    2. Secure all floats for Students’ Union events.

    3. To count and record money from Students’ Union events.

    4. Release a Mid-Year Financial Report by the third week of February detailing Students’ Union’s financial transactions.

  2. The duties of the Secretary are:

    1. To keep an accurate record of the minutes of all meetings of the Students’ Union.

    2. To maintain all correspondence as directed by the Students’ Union.

  3. The duties of the Communication Officer are:

    1. To oversee communication between the student body and the Students’ Union

    2. To promote and publicize all events run by the Students’ Union.

  4. The duties of the Room Representative is to:

    1. Act as a liaison between the class and council.

    2. Cast a vote on behalf of the class on matters pertaining to the Students’ Union.

    3. Actively assist in Students’ Union events and activities.

  5. The duties of Room Rep Alternative are to:

    1. Fulfil the duties for Room Rep listed above, in the event that a Room Rep is ill, unable to attend meetings or is recalled.
