09:12 – 09.15 (3 minutes)

Welcome / Reminder GLS Emerging Leaders’ Offering next Session / Announce Speaker Joseph Grenny – Introduction on Speaker Video (slides on back screen)

See Day 1 Session 4 page 21 (or back slide) for details on Emerging Leaders Appeal. Direct Delegates to page 40/41 in the Workbook for more information. Delegates will have been given a GLS Emerging Leaders’ Offering envelope when they came into the Session. Make sure that your Producer has given you one of these.
Joseph Grenny is a business strategy expert who has developed proven methods in driving sustainable and measurable changes in human behaviour. He was a speaker at the GLS last year and, by popular request, he has been invited back this year to speak on the subject of Mastering the Art of Crucial Conversations. But first, here is an introduction.
09:15 SPEAKER MESSAGE STARTS:

As leaders, we’ve all been in those situations where opinions vary, emotions run deep, and stakes are high. When handled well, these moments give leaders the power to make everything work better and move faster. But how do we best leverage them? Today, Joseph Grenny joins us to share his toolbox for how to navigate these crucial conversations …
09:57 SPEAKER MESSAGE ENDS:

And now for the crucial moment. Will they tell me the truth and possibly offend me? I ask them to point to the brownies they like best. No surprise that some tried to spare my feelings. But watch, even the one who gagged -- and how about really little kids? But do you want to know what they really thought? “Here guys, I have leftovers, does anybody want seconds?”

09:57 – 10:17 (20 minutes)

Set up and Facilitate Delegate Process Time (slide on back screen)

You will have a couple of minutes to set up the process time. Delegates should be given sufficient time to work through the questions, wrestle with ideas and begin defining action steps.

  • What is the key take-away from this session?

  • What is the one big idea for me in my situation?

Session 5: Joseph Grenny – Mastering the Art of Crucial Conversations … continued

Question 1 (slide on back screen)

Joseph said that at a young age people start to believe the myth that you often have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend. Think of an example when you faced a conflict between telling the truth and keeping a friend. What did you do, and what happened as a result? If you feel comfortable, share with those around you.

Remember that your facilitation of the Process Time will play a major role in helping Delegates get the best out of this participating part of the conference. For this reason, please invest some valuable time in preparing well beforehand.

Question 2 (slide on back screen)

Your job as a leader is to model, teach, coach, and measure the crucial conversations that most profoundly affect the mission you’re trying to accomplish. Consider the following questions to help you identify one of those conversations.

  • What are the key things that you, as a team, must achieve?

  • What crucial conversations might need to happen to keep those key areas on track?

  • Is there a crucial conversation that is not happening or not happening well? Try to identify it and describe how having that crucial conversation would help.

This edition provides the tools to prepare for high stake situations, transform anger and hurt feelings into powerful dialogue, and become persuasive, not abrasive.
Experience again or maybe for the first time, some of the most memorable and highly rated talks that have inspired and equipped leaders at the Summit. The Best Talks of the Summit DVD Edition celebrates the 20th year of the GLS and is available at the resources centre.
