| The Clemente Course in the Humanities Returns to Worcester!!
Worcester Interfaith 111 Park Avenue Worcester, MA 01609 508-754-5001 Acting together FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WORCESTER, MA – TUESDAY, July 22, 2014 Worcester Interfaith, in collaboration with Mass Humanities, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Quinsigamond Community College, Worcester State University, Holy Cross College, and the Worcester Art Museum will offer the Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities in Worcester this fall. The Clemente Course provides college level classes free of charge to motivated individuals who meet low-income guidelines and are at least 17 years of age. The program was offered previously in Worcester in the early 2000s but was terminated due to budget cuts. Through the efforts of a group of local educators led by State Representative Mary Keefe, the Clemente Course will be available to Worcester-area residents once again. Course participants study the great ideas and masterpieces of literature and poetry; moral philosophy; painting, sculpture, and architecture; and American History while receiving instruction in writing and critical thinking. Students who successfully complete the course earn six college credits from Bard College. The Clemente Course is designed for low-income adults in underserved communities who aspire to a higher education, but have been frustrated in their attempts to pursue college because of financial and other life circumstances. The program succeeds by removing many of these obstacles with dedicated instructors drawn from area colleges and universities, free tuition, free text books, child-care, and transportation. The Clemente Course is a national program first established at the Roberto Clemente Family Guidance Center in New York City in 1995 and brought to Holyoke by Mass Humanities in 1999. It now operates in Dorchester, New Bedford, and Brockton as well as Holyoke. Over 500 Massachusetts residents have successfully completed the program. The goal of the program is to provide the knowledge and skills that come from the study of the humanities. Many graduates of the course have gone on to pursue degrees at two and four-year colleges. All have emerged from the course better equipped to assume leadership roles in their communities. Classes in Worcester will take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights between 6-8pm at Elm Park Community School, 23 North Ashland Street, Worcester. Classes begin during the first week of October.
