TANTRAMAR REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCHOLARSHIPS – BURSARIES – AWARDS
APRIL 2014
Through the generosity of clubs and organizations in the Sackville, Dorchester, Port Elgin and Cape Tormentine areas a number of scholarships and bursaries are made available to graduating students at Tantramar Regional High School who will be attending a post-secondary institution in the 2014-2015 school year.
Graduates returning to school for upgrading are NOT eligible for these awards.
BURSARY: A sum of money given to a student planning to further his/her education after high school. The main criterion is need but good standing is important.
SCHOLARSHIP: A sum of money is given to a student for post-secondary education. Awards are based primarily on academic excellence.
PRIZES: Merchants, businesses and concerned citizens of Sackville, Dorchester, Port Elgin and Cape Tormentine areas have made contributions to the Prize Fund at Tantramar. Each year students with the highest mark in each Grade 12 course are given a gift to recognize their achievement.
SELECTION COMMITTEE: In some cases the organization or club which makes the award also makes the decision. Most awards are made by a committee composed of administration and representatives from the teaching staff at Tantramar.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Some scholarships and bursaries are restricted to those who live in certain areas, are enrolled in certain courses or whose parents are in a certain type of employment. Please, read each scholarship or bursary criteria carefully to see if you qualify. Do NOT apply for awards if you do not meet the criteria. The Selection Committee must go through each scholarship and bursary application and as you can appreciate, this process is very time consuming. The Committee can utilize time more effectively if students apply strictly for the awards that they qualify for.
ADDITIONS, DELETIONS OR OTHER CHANGES MAY TAKE PLACE AT A LATER DATE AS ALL INFORMATION HAS NOT YET BEEN VERIFIED. STUDENTS WILL BE IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED OF ANY SUCH CHANGES AS THEY OCCUR VIA AN ANNOUNCEMENT AS WELL AS A POSTING OF THE NEW INFORMATION ON THE BULLETIN BOARD OUTSIDE THE MAIN OFFICE.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
Your letters of application for bursaries or scholarships must contain the following information in order for the Selection Committee to make the selection process as fair as possible.
Home address and telephone number.
Institution you plan to attend and if you are presently accepted.
Course you plan to pursue and projected costs of your course of study.
Size of your family, age of siblings, and if there are any other members of your family presently in post-secondary education.
Parents’/guardians’ occupation and place of employment.
Part-time work you have/have had and summer work you have had and expect to have this summer.
Other bursaries/scholarships offered or received.
Involvement in the community.
Extra-curricular activities at Tantramar.
An activity or group that you have taken a leadership role in.
Try to keep your letter to one page in length. It is recommended you do your application letter on computer to ease copying (except for bursaries and scholarships that specifically ask for a handwritten letter).
SECTION I
For bursaries and scholarships numbered 1 through 38 a single letter of application is required as well as completing the form attached to the back of this package. If there are specific criteria for a bursary/scholarship please indicate how you meet these requirements on the same attached form. You must read the qualifications very carefully and pass the application letter and attached form to Mr. Bohan by the date specified.
SECTION II
For bursaries and scholarships numbered 39 through 56, separate letters of application must be sent to each of the addresses listed, if you qualify for the bursary.
You are a very special person. The Selection Committee would appreciate any other information about you that would help in their decisions.
For additional scholarships and bursaries not included in this package, check the bulletin board outside
Mr. Bohan’s Room 203. Announcements will be made informing graduating students of further awards.
