Zappar hires Shazam sales director to spearhead US expansion

Augmented reality business opens first overseas office in Silicon Valley
15th February 2016, London: Zappar, a leader in augmented reality experiences, has hired a senior Shazam exec to lead its new US office and serve its growing number of American clients.
The Silicon Valley office – Zappar’s first outside London – will be opened by VP of US Business Development, Jeff Ridgeway, who previously worked at Shazam as Director of Sales for the West Region.
Over 50% of Zappar’s 2015 revenue was generated from the US, with existing partners including global brands such as Hasbro, Warner Brothers and Universal NBC, and the new office will spearhead US expansion for the British tech start-up.
Since Zappar’s inception five years ago, there have been hundreds of millions of downloads of Zappar Powered apps for thousands of custom augmented reality campaigns.
Zappar’s mission is to democratise AR, which it does through its unique self-serve tools, allowing users to create their own snackable, interactive mobile experiences known as zaps. To date hundreds of thousands of zaps have been created by a myriad of users, from schools and start-ups to British pop sensation One Direction and their record label Sony Music. Other worldwide clients include Sony, Coca-Cola, Asda and Carrefour.
Jeff Ridgeway joins Zappar with a wealth of experience from working at brands including Shazam, Pandora and CafePress. Ridgeway will be ramping up Zappar’s US activity with a dedicated base in Silicon Valley, building on and accelerating the company’s growth.
Commenting on his new role, Ridgeway said: “I’m excited to join at such a pivotal time for Zappar – with so many of our clients based here, opening an office on the West Coast is the clear next step in Zappar’s journey. Brands have understood the value more interactive content can have for their consumers and there’s huge potential to build on our current strong base. We have some awesome things already in the pipeline for 2016 – I can’t wait to get started.”
Zappar will be growing its 23-strong team over the coming year across the UK and US, with a key focus being a new version of its self-service tool called Zappar Studio, which is currently in beta.
Caspar Thykier, co-founder and CEO of Zappar, said: “2016 is going to be a ground-breaking year for AR and VR, with several hardware and platform launches expected to take this technology into the mainstream. We’ve always been focused on helping anyone make valuable and valued augmented reality (and now mixed-reality) content which is intuitive to use, so we believe we are perfectly positioned to capitalise on this rapidly developing space. Hiring Jeff and opening in Silicon Valley will allow us to grow further and faster in the months and years ahead.”
