District of Columbia The book store was originally known as E.V. Anglim & Co., antiquarian bookstore, at 1424 F. and 349 Pennsylvania Avenue, in Washington DC. E.V. Anglim lived at New York Avenue and 15th. 1081 Beginning in 1877, the firm appears as “James Anglim & Co.”, booksellers in Washington DC circa 1876-1886. This firm was also known as "Anglim's Antiquarian Book Store" in 1882. During the late 19th century, this book store had the third largest collection of government documents, following the Library of Congress and Boston Public Library. In 1872 there drifted into the city of Washington a man small of stature, spare of figure, with shaggy whiskers, and keen blue eye, named James Anglim. He remained there until 1895, and during the time he formed the acquaintance of most of the prominent men tint eh country, whether in business of in politics. Hiss little book shop on one of the side streets as a gathering place of personages, and though his stock was small it contained the special sort of books they were interested in. When Anglim arrived in Washington he had little money, as the result , it was said, of rascality on the part of a former associate,. Therefore his headway was not rapid. But Scotch tenacity and close application soon improved matters, and in twenty-three years he succeeded in building up the great business now known as WH Lowdermilk & Co, and of which John T. Loomis is the present managing partner. When Mr. Anglim began he found that notwithstanding that they were easily found, no one was paying any attention to the collecting of Government publications, even those connected with the earliest history of the Government, especially such as were first issued in Washington; and he say that here was likely to be a fruitful field for business, as few if any of the great libraries had many of them. That he acted wisely has been demonstrated many times in the history of the house he found its business in this direction has been enormous. Anglim was very eccentric and temperamental , and though not and educated man in the modern sense, he had that saving grace of the more intelligent and successful of the old book dealers – a fine intuitive faculty. One who knew him most intimately, because connected with him in business , said of him: “He could scent a valuable literary item without effort. He was extremely pleasant and attracted men to him, and hew as the best salesman I ever saw; but he had s absolutely not business capacity; he was entirely without system and an easy victim for all sorts of swindlers.” Col Lowdermilk Takes Hold This latter condition led to his entering into a partnership with Col Lowdermilk, in 1879, and thereafter Anglim gave less attention to business minutiae. He could not bring himself to conducting a business systematically, and this brought a disagreement with his partner and finally led to his selling his interest to Col. Lowdermilk and Lohn T. Loomis in 1895. in 1895. Almost immediately Anglim sailed for his old home, where being an old home, he lived until death. Mr. Loomis had been for sometime in the store, having begun in 1885, and has had a continuous connection with the business ever since. James Anglim entered into a partnership with Will H. Lowdermilk. Anglim and Lowdermilk dissolved the partnership on March 1, 1886, with Anglim retiring “to engage in business in London.”1082. The Lowdermilk book store continued to operate in Washington, DC, until it closed and the building replaced by a Metro subway station in the 1970s.
