  1. Tony wants to sell some of his old CDs and computer games so he can buy a new game machine. The new machine will cost $300. He plans to spend $25 advertising the 21 CDs and 16 computer games he has to sell.

  1. Write an expression to show how much money Tony will receive from selling his CDs and games.



b) If Tony sells his CDs for $6 each and his games for $9 each, will he have enough to buy the new machine?

  1. Brenda rides her bike to work. She must travel 12 blocks to leave her neighbourhood. Once she leaves her neighbourhood, she must travel 2100 m along a main road to get to her job.

a) Write an expression to show the distance, in metres, she must travel to get to work.

b) If each block in her neighbourhood is 150 m long, represent her total trip to work using a single term


  1. Karen estimates that there are x gophers in each corn field on her farm. Each wheat field has two less than twice as many gophers as a corn field. Write a simplified expression to describe the number of gophers on her farm if she has 5 corn fields and 7 wheat fields.



  1. A piece of plywood is used to make a storage box. The plywood has the dimensions 2x feet by 4x feet.

  1. Develop an expression for the area of the plywood.



b) If x = 2, what is the area of the piece of plywood?


  1. A pool table is twice as long as it is wide. If the area of the pool table is 2.88 m2, what are the dimensions of the table?



  1. Write a simplified expression for the area of the triangle.



Answers:

  1. Example:

a) Let c represent the amount Tony will receive for selling one CD.

Let g represent the amount Tony will receive for selling one game.

Tony will receive from selling his games and CDs.

= 270


BUT you should subtract the cost of the ad:

=270 – 25 = 245

The new machine costs $300. Tony would not earn enough.


  1. Examples:

a) Let b represent 1 block in metres.

Brenda travels m to work.



b) Express the distance on the main road as a number of blocks.

2100÷150 = 14

(you divide by 150 because that is how long each block is)

Karen’s farm has gophers.

An expression for the area of the plywood is 8x2 ft2.



b)

The area of the plywood is 32 ft2.




  1. ANS:

If the w is the width of the table, then the length is 2w.

The width of the pool table is 1.2 m and the length is 2.4 m.





  1. ANS:

An expression for the area of the triangle is 4x – 5x2.
