LOCATION Atlanta is situated in the state of Georgia and is located to the south-east of America.
Its neighbouring states are South Carolina, to the north and Alabama to the east.
It has no neighbours to the either to its south or east because it is situated at the farthest point on the map.
Atlanta has a population of around 4.7 million people, 1 million of whom are black.
Over the years an inter-racial coalition of its business, political and civic leadership has taken advantage of its strategic position to transform it into a major travel destination, convention centre and transportation hub.
It is the only city in the south and one of only five in the whole of America that has an inner-city public railway system (MARTA).
Atlanta also boasts one of the highest concentrations of African American colleges and universities in the US.
A MAGNET FOR MAJOR CORPORATIONS Firms such as Coca Cola, Delta Airlines, Bell South Communications, CNN, The Cartoon Channel and Turner Broadcasting (divisions of Time Warner) have all chosen Atlanta for their headquarters.
The city of Atlanta is consistently ranked one of the best climates for doing business.
Many of America’s most successful black businesses and entrepreneurs are based in Atlanta.
The country’s largest black-owned construction company, HJ Russell Company built several of the city’s skyscrapers including the Georgia Pacific and Wachovia Bank corporate headquarters, the Atlanta City Hall complex, the Georgia Dome and the Carter Presidential Center.
HJ Russell itself has revenues in excess of $200 million.
Several of America’s largest black auto dealerships are located in Atlanta such as Hank Aaron BMW.
Irvin ‘Magic’ Johnson built the second theatre of his nationwide multiplex cinema in Atlanta and Def Jam media mogul Russell Simmons purchased the Dekalb Mall shopping complex.
Producers, writers and musical artists such as Toni Braxton, Usher, Keith Sweat, Ludacris and many others reside in Atlanta.
Civil Rights Leader Dr Martin Luther King is probably the most famous Atlantan of them all, becoming the first person in the city to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
