CLASS NOTES, 9/15: Let’s be pro-active! (And anti-passive…see what I did there?)
Transitive verbs are either in the active voice or the passive voice.
Voice is the form of a verb that indicates whether the subject of the sentence performs the action or is the receiver of the action of the verb.
What is the subject of a sentence?
The person, place, or thing being spoken or written about in a sentence. (noun, pronoun, or group of words used as a noun)
How do we find it?
Look for the noun/pronoun about which the verb asserts something.
Underline the subjects in the following sentences:
Jordan and Lennox idolize Bill Gates.
Reggaetón is one of my favorite genres of music.
Quit snarfing Spaghetti-Os and come play foosball! (you – implied)
In the room were desks, chairs, and one very large and confused elephant.
The dinosaur-themed party was thrown by Calvin.
Studying for the SAT is one of Lilly’s least favorite activities.
If the subject performs the action, the verb is in the active voice.
Ex: Arun eats Alphabet soup for lunch every day.
Which of the sentences above are written in active voice? Mark them with a star.
If the subject receives the action, the verb is in the passive voice.
Ex: The basketball was thrown at Casey’s head by Jon.
Which of the sentences you underlined above are written in passive voice? (Hint: this question uses passive voice.) Mark them with a diamond.
NOTE: You can always identify passive voice if you see a combination of the verb to be + past participle. For example:
is said
was written
had been stated
will be eaten
is going to be given
etc.
However, the verb to be on its own is either active (formed by the progressive tense, i.e., to be + -ing) or intransitive (linking or not). For example:
Tre was preaching the fundamentals of grammar to Allen when Allen slapped him.
Iker Casillas is the most beautiful man alive. (Is this active or linking?)
Atop the Eiffel Tower was a large spaceship.
Why are teachers always going on about eliminating passive voice in your writing?
Active voice tends to make your writing clearer and more concise; passive voice can make your sentences confusing (see basketball example).
