Transformative Mediation is an approach to conflict intervention that is based upon the view of conflict presented in the book “The Promise of Mediation” by Robert A. Baruch Bush and Joseph P. Folger. Transformative Mediation has been adopted in a wide array of contexts including organizational, court, community and governmental settings and has been used in family, neighbor, divorce, youth, multi-party disputes. It has also been adapted for conflict interventions that address team development and organizational disputes. This training program provides an understanding of the core purpose and foundational principles of the Transformative practice. In addition to exploring the goals and effects of Transformative intervention, this training provides participants with practice in core Transformative intervention skills and an understanding of how these skills are linked to Transformative intervention goals of party empowerment and recognition. Through lecture, discussion, video illustrations, and skill building exercises, this training program grounds participants in an approach to mediation practice that is rooted in the assumption that conflict is a crisis in human interaction. Joseph Folger is a Professor of Adult and Organizational Development at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is co-founder and current Board President of The Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation. His work at the Institute has included assisting with the design and delivery of the United States Postal Service REDRESS mediation program, as well as conducting assessment and benchmarking research for numerous organizations and mediation agencies. He has worked extensively as a third party intervener in organizational, community, court and small group disputes. He is also the co-founder of Temple University’s Conflict Education Resource Team – a peer mediation program for Temple University students. Basia Solarz serves as the inaugural Conflict Transformation Specialist for the award-winning Workplace Conflict Resolution Program at Capital District Health Authority in Nova Scotia, Canada. In this role, she provides mediation, conflict coaching, and education and training for the 12,000 people working in the district. She is a trainer and consultant to other healthcare districts across the province. Ms. Solarz is a member of the Partnership for Productive Organizational Conflict (Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia) which connects conflict resolution researchers, practitioners, and organizations to generate and share best practices in organizational conflict resolution. Basia is a Fellow of the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation.
