Advanced Narrative Writing Weds 2:00 – 5:00 Greenhouse This is an advanced writing and peer-editing workshop. You will write reported features for magazine-type sites, print or online; this is not news-writing. Assignments individually agreed on for you may range through profiles, essays, reported narratives, columns, criticism, and think pieces and will always be based in reporting and research. Feature editors look for writers who can offer, beyond solid reporting, excellence in well-founded social interpretation and intellectual analysis. In addition, they want voice, personality and story-telling strategies that keep readers engrossed. For example, you may start with a question, and ultimately take your readers along as you reconstruct your search for ever deeper answers. It will take immersion and investigation, then by the end it will be your own interpretation of facts and opinions that prevails. in essays, profiles, columns, immersive reportage, and Every week we will analyze several important pieces, ranging from classics to the best of the season’s trending magazine features. This is a time of churning debate in social and political life in the US; assumptions are being challenged, and we will partake of the urgent mood in socially conscious and investigative journalism today. As for storytelling skills, you’ll practice various narrative arcs, character development, scene construction, suspense, status details, dialogue that drives action, and “free indirect discourse”– which allows you to get inside another’s perspective. You’ll discover your unique authorial voice, all while respecting the obligation to be factually accurate and ethical. Once called “New Journalism” and pioneered by our own Clay Felker, along with Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, and many others, this ever-evolving American-born style has emerged as the stylistic lingua franca of long-form writing. Debating exemplary articles in ever lively group discussions, while writing and work shopping your own pieces, we’ll put the magic of great writing under the microscope. You will also acquire the art of constructive criticism, most useful to you as peer editor and in future editing roles. This class will make you a better writer, editor and critical thinker. It opens a congenial and stimulating space for expressing ideas, one of the purposes of graduate school. Bring your highest ambitions and enthusiasm for making sense of the world and telling your story the best possible way. You will be introduced to advanced narrative approaches through exercises and then two mid to long-form articles; the choice of topics will be, for the most part, up to you, and the final article can be a version of your master’s project, or a project begun in another class, with my permission. Although this is a writing production class, students concentrating in other media platforms are most welcome, with my prior approval, often granted.
