ALL Computer Architecture Task – Building a Tablet

Your group has been given the task to build a new tablet. The new tablet will sell for £250 so you will have to spend £250 or less on the parts. Will you go for a profit or try to impress people in hope they buy your future products? Is there a gap in the market you wish to break into?

Your manufacturing, shipping, marketing and other costs have been paid for so you will only have to worry about spending your budget on parts (If you can find out, do some sellers do bulk order discounts to save you money? If so, expect sales of 10k for the first roll out of the tablet) and choosing 2+ operating systems that would work with it. (What current OSes are used in the market? Why? What parts work with which OSes?)
You will have to think of your chosen market’s needs, the operating systems that the tablet will run and which components would help in which area. For example, does every tablet need a state of the art GPU chip in? Who will be using it? Why do they need it? What does each component do?

Market Area:

14-30

Travellers

People on the move

Considerations:

Creators

If you are unable to find a component you need, you can either:

  • Research other tablets and try to work out a price difference for the part and “use” that part – Links to these tablets and detailed reasoning will be needed

  • Use the laptop counterpart but this will cost you 25% extra for that part (due to refitting and resizing costs) and can only be done twice – Detailed reasoning will be needed

Also, assume that the parts will be manufactured to fit together so do not worry about buying wires and cabling to connect all the parts but they must fit in a realistic fashion. For example a motherboard without a CPU slot cannot hold a CPU.

Add your parts to this list and add rows if needed (such as more inputs). If you wish to skip a part, explain why. If the Reasoning section is too small, write it further down the page.
Your employers will want explanation about why your group have picked parts, the costs of them, the operating systems and how these go towards your end goal of the tablet design. They would rather not have a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 exploding battery incident in the near future so pick parts carefully!

Your employer has given you some places to look into for parts but your group will have to expand this research to find all the parts.

If you are really struggling with part finding or budget issues, your employer is willing to allow the use of a Mini-PC as most of the parts. Of course, you will need to research each one fully to get the best parts for the cost and usefulness of the tablet and you would be expected to add to and upgrade aspects of it as your group seems fit.

Microphones can be used for multimedia purposes, for example to call people, as this will be a tablet it is most likely that there will also be a camera, meaning video calling is always an option as well, so a microphone is required in order for the other person to hear you. Some apps also use the microphone, for example the company Smule has a singing game where the user sings into the microphone that will affect the gameplay on screen.

Chosen as it already fits a tablet and there are few other cameras for tablets I could find. Also, it is of fairly good quality for the price.

Operating System

Operating System Choice 1 (with explanation

Android, because it is the most used operating system for tablets which means we can target the largest possible audience. In addition, Android has the largest selection of apps, in large numbers of different categories, meaning users will have a larger range of apps to use for any purpose

Operating System Choice 2 (with explanation)

IOS, as it is the 2nd most popular operating system meaning we have an even larger audience to target for our game.

Your employer has decided to give you a boost in budget due to the popularity of your “budget” tablet design. You now have £400 to spend on a “luxury” version. What will you change? What will you upgrade? How will that affect your target market choices?
