Artist Call – The Sounding of the Right Whale, an art auction for One Hundred Miles
Did You Know Every year, December marks the season for North Atlantic right whales to come home to Coastal Georgia’s waters to calve their newborns. Our waters are the only existing calving ground on earth, so we play an incredibly important role in the future of these magnificent and endangered species.
What We are Doing On December 1st, One Hundred Miles, a coastal Georgia advocacy and conservation organization, will host an event to welcome the Right Whales home for the winter. We are seeking artist donations for a silent auction to celebrate this special species.
One Hundred Miles is working to increase visibility and awareness of the right whale, while following policy work where we can find opportunities to strengthen protections for the species at local and international scales.
There is no time like now to help the right whale! Over the last 90 days, the right whales have faced the largest die off event in recorded history. Fourteen whales have surfaced dead in the northern end of their migratory area. This is a huge impact on a population of less than 450, making them the most endangered large marine mammal on the planet.
Information about the North Atlantic right whale can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1L2OqnUxOGKOqjJGkKTBH39XZFhqyZM8DIaAyy8hWaKo/edit?usp=sharing
Call to action for Artists We call upon artists to help us share the beauty of this creature, and their struggle to survive. We hope artists will contribute one piece to a silent auction event to be held on December 1st in the Starland District of Savannah. The piece should be inspired by the species of the North Atlantic right whale, it’s connection to Coastal Georgia, or its struggle for survival in a stressful sea.
We also invite artists to attend the event and discuss their work with local press.
If you are interested in submitting a piece for the auction, please complete the info request on the next page and email to Paulita@OneHundredMiles.org.
One Hundred Miles will include your name on all press and promo materials. We would also like to feature your online artist info on One Hundred Miles media, in the weeks before the show.
