3. Matters Arising
Karen informed the group that Dr Peter Bull will be leaving the Waves Practice at the end of September and joining his new practice in Sheffield where he is already living. Patients are being informed and an announcement had been placed on the Minden website. Dr David Sutcliffe will be joining the Waves Practice in Dr Bull’s place and some of you may remember him from a couple of years ago when he spent time here at Minden. Karen will invite Dr Sutcliffe to our next PRG meeting so you can all meet him.
AP1 – Karen to invite Dr David Sutcliffe to our next meeting on 6 November 2012.
Karen said the new Patient Cabinet still needs:
one patient representative for Prestwich township, and
two patient representatives for East Ward township.
Jennifer felt it would be difficult to get anybody to volunteer for the East Ward positions – as patients from this area don’t seem to be interested but, ironically, it is this area that has early death rates and many and varied health issues. We do need to find ways of getting people interested. What about asking at centres like: The Mosses, Jinnah Day Centre, Topping Fold, Children’s Services etc?
Who do patients contact if they are interested in these positions and what is the procedure? They can contact their surgery where the Practice Manager should be able to point them in the right direction. Alternatively, if you know anybody who is with Minden Family Practices that is interested they can contact Karen Partington here at Moorgate on telephone number 0161 447 9806.
Jacqui said she is already a representative on the Patient Cabinet for West Ward township (covering Elton, where she lives). She said she will be attending another meeting soon and will give feedback from this at our next PRG meeting.
AP2 – Jacqui to give feedback from patient cabinet meeting at next PRG.
Karen handed out a comment that had been made anonymously by a patient which read:
“There are insufficient spaces for the disabled to park as it is a
parking area for shoppers, especially those for M&S. A revenue
raiser for the Council rather than a service for the needy and the
disabled. Shame on the Council!”
Karen agreed that there is still a problem with the car park and it is not really big enough for the size of our building but, at the same time, it is not Minden’s job to police it as Bury Council run it. It was suggested that a notice be put up stating the car park was Council run. Saturdays seemed problematical with shoppers nipping over to Marks and Spencer at a time when the Walk-in Centre is usually quite busy. Denise said disabled patients didn’t have to pay if they used the disabled spaces but what if they parked in a non-disabled space do they then have to pay? Karen was unsure about this but said she would ask Nicola, a secretary at Moorgate who attends the tenants meetings, to find out for us and bring the answer back to our next meeting. Karen said traffic wardens do patrol regularly, sometimes from 8.00 am. She stated the car park is free from 6.00 pm onwards.
AP3 – Karen to ask Nicola about payment policy in car park for disabled users parking in a non-disabled space.
It has been announced today in the Government’s cabinet reshuffle that Jeremy Hunt is to replace Andrew Lansley as the Health Secretary. An “oh dear, isn’t it Jeremy Hunt who wants to privatise the NHS?” went around the room.
4. Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Update
Unfortunately, Michelle cannot be at tonight’s meeting therefore we are unable to have a CCG update at this time.
5. Minden Services Feedback
Why do males in the 23-45 age range not attend the surgery as much as other patients? Do we need to open longer in the evenings in order that this group of patients can attend the surgery, especially if they work away from home during the day? Do we need to alter Patient Partner and make it easier for them to use? Do we need to use texting and emailing more as methods of communication with this group of patients? Does this particular patient group find it hard getting through to reception to make appointments? Karen said that Michelle is thinking of putting a questionnaire together so we can get some answers.
A debate ensued on the above subject but in the end it was felt that males in this age range are just generally healthier and so didn’t need to attend the surgery as often as other age groups. So do we really need to prepare a questionnaire and undertake this exercise – aren’t we not just making extra work for ourselves? Jennifer said the phrase “If it aint broken don’t mend it” sprung to mind. What we could do though is ask “What do you like about Minden and the services we offer?” Work from the positive rather than the negative.
Karen mentioned a recent NHS skin cancer campaign for men in this age range which she felt was effective. She had received an advertising postcard through her door which encouraged wives and girlfriends to check their male partners for suspicious-looking skin lesions and which gave pictures as examples etc. She felt this kind of advertising grabbed the public’s attention much more and she did in fact check her husband over. Perhaps more of the same approach is needed on other men’s health issues? Karen said that Minden has a Molemate machine which checks suspicious moles/lesions for signs of malignancy and Dr Raza has a special interest in dermatological matters.
The Group also felt that something needed to be done about patients not turning up for appointments as this wasted valuable GP and nurses time and resources. Brian suggested perhaps a sign could be put up in the waiting area saying:
“YOUR APPOINTMENT - CANCEL IT, CHANGE IT, BUT DON’T IGNORE IT”
He had seen such a sign up at Fairfield and thought it most apt and a quick reminder for patients. Everyone agreed it would be a good idea to have one her at Minden.
Karen said we will continue this debate with Michelle when she attends our next meeting.
6. Children’s Play Area
Jacqui kindly brought in some information on TV Licensing which she had obtained from the website: www.tvlicensing.co.uk. This states that we don’t need a TV license to play just DVDs on our TV screens, so we could play children’s DVDs in the waiting area and set up a children’s corner, maybe over in the corner where Waves Practice patients usually sit as it is away from the counter and lift and stairs areas. It would give them something to watch and entertain them as unfortunately some children do become bored and start to run about. Karen said she will ask Minden employee Kelly Davies to contact local businesses with regard to donations of DVDs, toys, books etc and will bring something back to our next meeting.
AP4 KP to speak to KD re obtaining donations of toys, books and DVDs for children’s TV/play area.
7. Any Other Business
Bernard wanted to mention that an acquaintance had recently received an appointment letter for an echocardiogram at Moorgate PCC which had been sent from a company called PDS in Thornton on the Fylde coast. How come this company were doing this and they weren’t having it done at Fairfield? Denise said it was happening a lot, and it’s called privatization! At least the appointment was local and not on actually on the Fylde! Another instance of a patient having a damaged ankle was mentioned - they had gone to A&E at Fairfield and then been told they would have to be treated at North Manchester General Hospital or Wrightington & Wigan Hospital. Ann said that Orthopaedics are now based at North Manchester and there were also very good foot and ankle surgeons based at Wrightington & Wigan Hospitals and this would be the reason these hospitals were mentioned to the patient. Denise said that lots of services are on the move and the NHS is very keen on creating centres of excellence. Patients will have to be more willing to travel.
8. Date of Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be held at 5.30pm on Tuesday 6 November 2012 in the boardroom at Minden.
There being no further business the meeting closed at 6.50 pm.
