From the Principal’s Pen
It has been a very fast and rewarding first semester here at Aurora High School. The students just completed their mid-term exams and we have begun the second semester. Our students are involved in the scheduling process this month; parents, it is important that you have conversations with your child to assist them in making good choices that will help them be successful. We have many curricular opportunities for our students and as one example of these options we took nearly fifty students in late January to visit the Excel TECC programs to help them become aware of all the possibilities for their continued education.
We continue to strive for and achieve excellence at AHS. We organized a school wide fundraiser between Thanksgiving and Christmas, called “Aurora for Others” with a focus on giving to needy individuals or organizations within our community. The staff and students raised nearly $3,500 which we contributed to the Jimmy V Cancer foundation, St. Augustine’s Hunger Center and the Divine Intervention cause. Congratulations to our Rotary students of the month for February; seniors Joshua Ohman and Annick Dall, who are very deserving of this recognition. Congratulations to Ty Mitch in wrestling and John Trew in boy’s basketball for being named Plain Dealer players of the week in the past month.
We have thirty-four students who have been awarded with the distinction of election into the AHS National Honor Society. Congratulations to Monique
Brunatti, Jillian Carlson, Michelle Cullen, Ellen Dankelson, Nicolas Dicesare, Gerrick Doss, Dylan Ekstrand, Chelsea Flowers, Michael French, Rebecca Fussner, Arielle Glassman, Tim Grabnic, Morgan Hauenstein, Caitlin Houlahan, Samantha Huston, Robert Kirk, Pramita Kothakota, Chrysa Kovach, Heather Kuch, Ariel Kuhn, Sophia Loferski, Nicholas Mirolli, Amanda Munson, Jennifer Radis, John Rausch, Mitchell Romito, Connor Rosselot, Mariesa Samba, Dylan Timberlake, David Walker, Andrew Wallace, Rebecca Williams, Zoe Ingrams, Joshua Ohman.
We have numerous co-curricular activities in February; the wrestling team is looking to regain the title as Chagrin Valley Conference Champions as we are hosting the CVC wrestling tournament on February 1st and 2nd. Our students from AHS will be one of the featured teams on the Academic Challenge which will air on February 2nd. We will host our monthly Parent Communication Forum on February 7th at 10:00 a.m. and over 100 students from the junior class will be traveling to New York City on February 15th thru the 18th. We will also have a Band Concert on February 21st beginning at 7:30 p.m.

AURORA FOR OTHERS
The second annual Aurora For Others charity project was conducted last month at Aurora High School. The project allows students to focus on those in need during the holiday season and to lend a helping hand. Aurora High School students raised money for charities by competing in a Coin War. Each grade had a jar. Coins put in the jar added to their total. Paper money added to other grade’s jars subtracted from their total. More than $3000 dollars was raised for three charities. The charities selected this year were the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer research, the Saint Augustine Hunger Center, and the Divine Intervention Fund. The project was concluded with a student faculty basketball game. Aurora High School teachers Jen Simmerman and David Munson led a team of many student and faculty volunteers to help make a positive difference in the lives of others.
