SYPNOSIS Bayou Corne Sinkhole was discovered in the year 2012
at the Assumption Parish, Louisiana, United States and it also called the Louisiana sinkhole. It is important to note that this sinkhole was created from the collapsed underground salt dome cavern operated by Texas Brine Company and owned by Occidental Petroleum also in addition to that geologist stated that nature did not cause the hole and to put it in a nutshell this massive sinkhole was considered as an man made sinkhole. At first it wasn’t considered as a sinkhole because of their sizes that only occupy the size of the tennis court and because of that it was called a slurry hole. Whereof, the first appearance of this sinkhole is the surface area that has already reached at 8 acres in size and the current size of this massive sinkhole was about 37 acres with depth of 750 ft (230 m. Along with it, this massive sinkhole was still growing. It created a tremendous destruction to the town
just like destroying trees, boats, homes and it causes the forced evacuation of the 300 residents in the nearby town of Assumptions. Moreover, this sinkhole caused a lot of problem to the residents of the town because
of the smell of the diesel, which gave them headaches and vomit. Furthermore, it also polluted the water.
As years passed, this manmade disaster zones has been deemed to no longer at risk to the public because the risk from the instability and seeping, flammable natural gas released in the sinkhole’s formation have been mitigated.
