BHAGAVAD GITA CHANTING PROGRAM 2014




Venue: Hindu Temple of Atlanta

Date: March 29th, 2014


Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

Welcome to the BHAGAVAD GITA CHANTING PROGRAM 2014


To promote an active interest in learning Bhagavad-Gita among our young generation, the Gita chanting competition is organized.
Participants will compete on their ability to chant Chapter 9 of the Gita.

The following criteria will be used to judge the participants and select the winners:
1. Proper intonation and pronunciation of the verses.
2. Flawless delivery from memory.
3. Presentation and overall effect.

Rules for the competition:


  1. Participants can participate in a higher grade category if they wish to. For example, a 4th grade student can participate in the 5th/6th grade category.




  1. Each participant is expected to memorize all the verses for that age group as stated above.




  1. The participant should be able to begin chanting from the cueing of the first two words of any verse (within the limits for the respective age group) in the chapter. The starting verse will depend on cue card picked by the participant.




  1. After cueing of the first two words of any verse if the child is not able to chant that child will be disqualified.

5. Disqualified children will not be given a participation trophy.


6. From the starting verse the participant will be required to chant the number stated in the last column above consecutively. Each participant in the group will chant the same number of verses although starting verse could be different depending on the cue card.

7. The verses (Slokas) must be chanted in correct order.


8. The Learning Aid CD is a good guide to proper method of chanting. Weekly teaching classes at 12.00 P.M. at the Hindu Temple will be held to help participants prepare for the competition.
9. Some important aspects of chanting for the competition are listed below as guidelines for more clarity.


    • Crisp and correct pronunciation

    • Tone and flow.

    • Proper “Chanting Anushtup Chhanda” (breaking each line after the 8th letter).

    • Confidence and ease of chanting:

    • Poise and presentation

    • Details regarding pronunciation:




      1. Visarga should be pronounced fully at the break of a line and at the end of a line (if applicable). Visarga is not to be chanted fully in the middle of the line. 'Visarga preceded by Ksha should be chanted fully even if it comes in the middle of the line.

      2. Deergha should be chanted twice as long as the hrasva.

      3. Sandhi vicheda to be done properly.

      4. Halant should be chanted properly.

      5. Following letters to be chanted clearly. (eg. Ka, Kha, Ga, Gha, Ta Tha, Da, Dha and Dha with the dot under, S and Sha etc)

      6. Avagrahas are not to be chanted.



The judges’ decision will be final




The last date for registration is March 15th, 2014



The competition will start promptly at 1 PM and expected to finish by 4 PM.
