September 2010
Commandant: Ed O’Flynn:

I have just returned from the Marine Corps League National Convention in Greensboro NC and visiting family members in the area. My wife and I had a wonderful time, thank you. Since many of our members can’t make the regular meetings I thought I would share a couple of the highlights of the convention with everyone rather than my usual newsletter. I can see your smiles.

1. If you served in the Korean War anytime between June 25th 1950 and October 15th 1954 the South Korean Government will pay half the airfare and all expenses while in that country when you sign up for a battlefield tour. For more info go to: www.miltours.com.

2. Marine Corps League membership showed a 4th quarter increase of 1,385 members. That’s the good news. As with most organizations the National MCL is having trouble with budgets. It was suggested that next year’s dues be raised $2.00. That’s the bad news. But wait, the membership voted that down and another way to overcome the budget shortfall was suggested. When you receive greeting cards, address labels, notepads, etc from the MCL please reply with a donation if possible. That’s more good news and hopefully it won’t hurt anyone.

3. A GEICO Insurance representative was there and mentioned that if anyone goes to their website or phones in for a quote and mentions that they belong to the Marine Corps League, the National MCL gets a $5.00 donation. In 2012 it goes up to $7.00 and in 2014 it goes up to $9.00. That holds true for any type of insurance quote, auto, home, boat, etc. No obligation to buy, just ask for a quote. Easy money for our Marine Corps League.

4. Young Marine of the Year award was presented to 16 year old Casey Scott from the Quantico Young Marines. Casey told the story about the lives of the men who are portrayed on the Iwo Jima Memorial. I’m telling you, a professional motivational speaker couldn’t have done better.

5. At Thursday night’s dinner, Navajo Code Talker, Bill Toledo told his story about his life growing up, enlisting in the Marines with other Navajo’s, boot camp, traveling to exotic places like Iwo Jima and returning to the reservation unable to talk about what they did for over 20 years. These men will be forever revered in Marine Corps History.

6. Our new slate of officers voted on and sworn in where: National Commandant - Vic Voltaggio; National Senior Vice - James Tuohy; National Junior Vice - John Kovalcik; and National Judge Advocate - Richard Gore.

Lot’s of other stuff and speakers to talk about but I thought these were the most interesting and beneficial for our members. Looking forward to seeing ya’ll (that’s NC talk) at the next meeting.

Keep all of our military and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Semper Fi, Ed O’Flynn

Junior Vice Commandant: Joe Hiers:

All of us are keenly aware of our Marine Corps motto and traditions but the longer we remain on our last patrol before we take up our positions on “Heaven’s Streets”, our opportunities to put into practice those traditions are diminishing. That is why it is with a great deal of pride I am able to report to you that one of our own, John Sullivan has recently represented our Corps, our Detachment, and most impressively himself as he executed the tradition of not leaving one of our own behind.

Last month it was brought to John’s attention that a Marine who was recently discharged from the hospital and whose wife was battling cancer needed help.  The Marine’s distraught daughter contacted John to see if our Detachment could provide him with any assistance. The Marine was not a member of the League or other military organization. John encountered some resistance as he attempted to qualify the Marine for support. In order to make the Vietnam veteran eligible for help John also offered to pay the expenses necessary for the Marine to become a member of our Detachment.

John Sullivan’s steadfast devotion to the wellbeing of a Marine he never met truly reflects great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and especially this Detachment.

My name is Joe Hiers and John Sullivan’s putting into practice our finest traditions has given me another role model in our Corps.

Music Benefit

November 19th or 20th between 7pm and 9pm are the working time and dates for the Ruth Wyand concert. Many details still to be worked out but the ball has started rolling.

New Members

Welcome Ed Afanador of EHT. Ed was sworn in at the August meeting. Welcome Howard Huston of EHT. Howard was a member-at-large and he filled out a transfer form at the August meeting to join our Detachment. Marine Huston lives between Marine Fields and Marine Hiers. At one time the wives of Marines Huston, Hiers, and Fields all worked together as RN’s. Marines Hiers and Fields also happened to work for 30 years with Marine Huston’s brother-in-law at the phone company. Marine Huston never had a chance. Small world isn’t it.

Sick and Distressed

The Detachment’s condolences go out to our Chaplain Dan Ball on the passing of his wife Mary Alice (Midgie). Midgie passed away peacefully at home August 30th after her battle with lung cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family at this very difficult time. Her funeral service was well attended by Detachment member’s in red blazers.

House/Building

Footings for the stairs are finally in work. The building insulation for the upstairs has been delivered. Ike Rucker made a certificate of appreciation for the building architect, Harry Harper, for all his work. Jim Dunbar discussed solar panels for the building’s new roof, more to follow on that possible project. Need volunteers to help cut the grass and weedwack.

Scouts

Jordan Clark attained the rank of Eagle, now we’re waiting for a date for his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Also there are two “Life’ scouts that could be coming up for Eagle soon. Troop 177 from Mays Landing will be camping out at our property Sept 17-19.

Kitchen

Cleaned up the overhead storage area and installed patriotic rope lights around bar. Jim Dunbar will be making lima bean soup/stew for the September meeting.

Road Clean-Up

The next clean-up is September 11 the Saturday after our meeting, starts at 0830 at our building. Remember to bring bug spray for ticks, chiggers, etc.
