Cavalry Roster
Below is a list of many of the players that will be suiting up for the Canberra Cavalry, driven by Rolfe Renault, this summer. It is not a comprehensive list. As more names are confirmed, the organisation will provide information about each player. The list is broken up into four (4) groups: local talent, returning stars, players affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays and new stars.


Local Talent
Steven Kent

Left Handed Pitcher

Bats: Left Throws: Left

Born: 5 August 1989, Canberra, ACT Australia

This will mark Kent’s fourth season with the Cavalry. His strength at pitching was evident during the off season when he played for Australia in the World Baseball Classic. The local Canberra boy is a fan favourite, who pitched during the Championship Series. Kent led the team in wins and saves during the 2011-2012 season, making him a finalist for the ABL Relief Pitcher of the Year award. He rode that momentum into the 2012-2013 season finishing with a strong ERA of 2.45, the lowest of his career with the Cavalry.

Kyle Perkins

Right Handed Pitcher

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 28 June 1991, Canberra, ACT Australia
Kyle Perkins returns to the Cavalry for his fourth season. After spending much of his baseball career as a catcher, Perkins switched to a relief pitcher and 2012-13 was his first full season to toe the rubber for the Cavalry. Perkins will be relied on to help the newer faces acclimate to play in the Australian Baseball League.

Ben Warner



Outfielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 24 August 1988, Canberra, ACT Australia
Ben Warner is also returning to the Cavalry for a third season. Known as “B-Dub” to the fans, the outfielder is likely to be popular again this year. Warner improved his batting average to .256 last season and is looking to develop even further this season.

Robbie Perkins



Catcher

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 29 May 1994, Canberra, ACT Australia
Robbie Perkins has just returned to Canberra after his first season of affilated baseball with the Colorado Rockies organisation. Perkins spent most of the last season with the Cavalry out with a wrist injury and is looking forward to more playing time with the team this year. Perkins is determined to continue developing as a player and learning from experienced catcher Jack Murphy.

Aaron Sloan



Infielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 26 December 1993, Canberra, ACT Australia
Sloan is returning for his second season with the Cavalry. The native Canberran had a stellar showing in the Championship series, finishing with a .625 batting average and a home run. He was named Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series. He hopes to carry his great performance into this season.

Michael Wells



Infielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 23 January 1973, Canberra, ACT Australia
This will be Wells fourth season with the Cavalry. The veteran had the most at bats of any Australian player in the team last year. He hit the game and championship clinching home run in the seventh inning of game two of the ABLCS, fitting for the only member of the team to play for the original ABL franchise in the Capital, the Canberra Bushrangers. With so much experience Wells is likely to be a guide for those new to the Australian Baseball League.

Sam Thornton



Infielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 10 September 1990, Canberra, ACT Australia
Sam Thornton is a new face to the Cavalry. The native Canberran just returned from playing baseball for Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, USA. While there Thornton boasted a .309 batting average earned over 162 at bats.

Returning Stars
Jeremy Barnes

Infielder

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 13 April 1987, Rowlett, Texas USA
As a standout for the Cavalry last season, Barnes held the second highest batting average on the team with a .343 earned over 166 at bats. He is returning for his second season and hopes to continue to play strong.

Antonio Callaway



Outfielder

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 4 September 1987, Lilburn, Georgia USA
Fan favourite Antonio Callaway is returning for his second season with the Cavalry. During the off season Callaway earned his body building pro card. He says the achievement has helped him build his focus, which he hopes to use this year with the Cavalry.

Brian Grening



Pitcher

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 10 June 1985, Newport Beach, California USA
Grening spent a lot of time on the mound last season, finishing with 75.1 regular season innings under his belt. Grening he ended with a 4-2 record and a 2.87 ERA. Back for his third season, Grening was the ace of the Cavalry Pitching staff and will again be asked to go up against the best pitchers of the Cavalry rivals around the league
Sean Toler

Pitcher

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 7 January 1987, Des Peres, Missouri USA
Toler is returning to the Cavalry for a second season. “Toler Time” was the call when he entered the game last season as he was the anchor of the bullpen, shutting down the opposition and closing out games. He earned the save in both Championship Game vicotrys, recording the final out of the Championship, fielding a hard ground ball hit back at him and flipping it to Aaron Sloan at firs. The team is excited to have him back as he finished last season with a whopping 11 saves and a 2-0 record.

Chris Motta



Pitcher

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 22 March 1990, Bronx, New York USA
Chris Motta was a workhorse for the Cavalry last season pitching 57.2 innings. He boasted 46 strike outs, the third most on the team. He’s ready to continue to develop as a player this year.

Eric Massingham



Pitcher

Bats: Right, Throws: Right



Born: 19 November 1986, Walnut Creek, California USA
Eric Massingham is returning for his second season with the Cavalry. He was a pivotal part of the strong Cavalry bullpen, finishing last year with a winning record and a 3.60 ERA.

Toronto Blue Jays
Jack Murphy

Catcher

Bats: Switch Throws: Right



Born: 6 April 1988, Sarasota, Florida USA
Jack Murphy signature moustache made him a fan favourite last year. He was a leader on and off the field last season, finishing near the top of every offensive category, while guiding the young Cavalry pitching staff. The catcher had a strong off season with Toronto Blue Jays affiliate teams, reaching the AAA level, just one step below the majors.

Shane Opitz



Infielder

Bats: Left Throws: Right



Born: 10 January 1992, Centennial, Colorado USA
Shane Opitz joins the Cavalry for the first time this year. He was drafted by the Jays in 2010. He recently finished a season with Dunedin Blue Jays with a .309 batting average.

Jon Berti



Infielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right



Born: 22 January 1990, Troy, Michigan USA
This with be Jon Berti’s first season with the Cavalry. He comes off a season with the Dunedin Blue Jays. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2011. He lead the team with 56 stolen bases and the Cavalry will look to his speed to help score runs at the top of the lineup.
Opiz and Berti were the shortstop – secondbase combination for the Dunedin Blue Jays and will be the double play combination for the Cavalry this season
Michael Crouse

Outfielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right



Born: 22 November 1990, Port Moody, British Columbia Cananda
Michael Crouse was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008. He is coming off his second season with the Dunedin Blue Jays where he boasted 300 at bats. This will be his first season with the Cavalry.

New Stars
Matt Blazynski

Catcher

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 15 January 1983, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania USA

Matt Blazynski played for the Les Capitales de Quebec in the Canadian-American Association. Blazynski boasted a .360 batting average with Quebec. He will be the third catcher on the Cavalry roster behind Perkins and Murphy, but with his experience he will assist the pitching staff.

Casey Frawley

Infielder

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 17 September 1987, New Haven, Connecticut USA

Casey Frawley is a seasoned player. He was drafted in 2009 by the Cleveland Indians. A long-time friend of catcher Jack Murphy, Frawley is excited to be on the Cavalry roster. Frawley is coming off an injury and looking to build back into the form he had while playing in the Indians and Rockies organisations.

Nick Pugliese

Pitcher

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 18 September 1985, Plainville, Connecticut USA

Nick Pugliese has spent the last three years playing with the Italian Baseball League, and also a representative on the Italian National Team. He has earned a 2.73 ERA over three seasons. While he will be representing Italy in the Asia Series, Pugliese will be returning to the Cavalry roster afterwards.

Jeff Lyman

Pitcher

Bats: Right Throws: Right

Born: 14 January 1987, San Fransisco, CA USA

Jeff Lyman was drafted in 2005 by the Atlanta Braves. Lyman has played with teams around the United States at various levels up to AAA, which is one step below the major leagues, at one point making the 40-man roster for the Braves.


Ethan Cole

Pitcher

Bats: Left Throws: Right

Born: 27 October 1989, Austin, Texas USA

Ethan Cole comes to the Cavalry after a season with the Kansas City T- Bones. Cole pitched 39 games for the T-Bones for a total of 80 innings. He has been a teammate of Cavalry standouts Sean Toler and Brian Grening.

Mike Morgan

Pitcher

Bats: Left Throws: Right

Born: 22 May 1990, Lima, Ohio USA

Michael Morgan comes to the Cavalry recommended by Cavalry pitcher Chris Motta. He will work out of the bullpen. This hard throwing right hander has a lot to prove and comes to Canberra the way Motta did last season, trying to be noticed in this game.
