I. ORIGIN AND GROWTH OF SUBURBS
1. Define suburb and identify population distribution trends as they apply to suburbs. What are some of the benefits associated with living in a suburb?
Suburb: a residential/commercial area situated win an urban area but outside the central city
Advantages: more extensive suburbs appeared as cities grew rapidly in 19th century because
of the industrial revolution
2. Define annexation. How has the process of annexation changed in recent years?
Annexation-process of legally adding land area to a city
•19th century-favored this because the city offered better services
•recent decades-prefer organizing own services overpaying city taxes
3. Due to the trend mentioned in #2, in the US, local government have become extremely fragmented. What does this mean regarding services Other issues this will make it difficult to solve regional problems of traffic management, solid waste disposal, and the building of affordable housing. What are consolidations and federations? What has prompted these?

City and county governments are combined, such as Indianapolis and Miami.
Federations
a government that links and unites different groups. Define smart growth and give some examples of it.
