China, Japan and Mexico invest us$200 million in automotive plant in the country


Mr. Ildefonso Guajardo, Minister of Economy, announced an investment of us$200 million for the construction of an automotive plant as a global strategic alliance between Mexico, China and Japan.
Mr. Guajardo explained that Giant Motors and China's Anhui Jianghuai Automobile (JAC Motor), in addition to Japanese distributor Chori Company Limited, will invest at a plant in the state of Hidalgo.
The plant will produce up to 10,000 vehicles over the next four years, Mr. Omar Fayad, Governor of Hidalgo state said.
The first vehicles to be assembled would be the JAC's SUV S2 and SUV S3. In addition, they plan the production of electric cars.
He explained that the vehicles would have a five-year "defense-to-defense" guarantee.
At the announcement of investment, Mr. Guajardo Villarreal mentioned that the federal government maintains the goal of producing five million vehicles by the year 2020.
Meanwhile, the director of Giant Motors in Latin America, Mr. Elías Massri, estimated that initially the company will have five local suppliers.
Mr. Ildefonso Guajardo said that this investment is made at a key moment when Mexico needs to diversify the market.
