Materials Needed: Student notebooks; pens/pencils; paper for instructor; overhead projector/unit; screen; instructor laptop to demonstrate instruction and links; student computers/iPads.
Essential Question/ Can I successfully log into and navigate the CIS system
Topic Question(s): to explore my college and career interests and options? Can I successfully find and utilize the “Glossary of Terms” to help define college and career related words?
Procedure: Review with students information from the first two lessons on college and career information. Ask students to reflect on what information they have learned over the last few days related to college and career information including new vocabulary and goals and interests related to college and career.
Introduce the Career Information System (CIS) to the class Include in the discussion important reasons why students in 8th grade would want to/need to begin to understand the CIS system for their plan and profile the next for years of High School. Include in the discussion an overview of ways the system can be helpful in establishing a college and career profile, writing resumes, searching career pathways and exploring college and career options.
Activity 1
Using the computers or iPads, have each student follow directions to the CIS link. Using the steps indicated have each student log into CIS using the passwords they were given during their humanities classes.
Give the students approximately 15 minutes to explore all of the links and options available to them through the Middle School version of the program.
Activity 2
After approximately 15 minutes, allow students to access the link to their High School Feeder programs on CIS and spend another 15 minutes exploring those options.
Encourage the students to pay particular attention to the Glossary of Terms link, the Interest Inventory and the Career Cluster Inventory.
Activity 3
With the last 5-10 minutes of class have the student’s log out of CIS. Ask each student the following reflection questions below and ask them to write the question and then the answers in their notebooks. Ask the students to finish by writing down one area you would like more time explore the next time you log into CIS.
Assessment Methods: At the end of the class ask the students independently the following question, “What is something you discovered in the CIS program that you found very interesting?” “Identify one thing you know how to do today that you did not know before?”
