| Why no Apple Computers?
We are often asked why we do not recommend the use of Apple computers in engineering. Well, it is not because we are anti-Apple. In fact many of us love our iPhones and iPads, and, believe it or not, some of actually use Apple computers in the office and at home. So, if we like them that much, why do we not recommend you get one? The answer is simple—compatibility. While much of the work you will do on your computer will be routine office-type functions (Word documents, PowerPoint, email, etc.) some engineering students will use specialized software that only works on IBM compatible computers. Some of this software is not even available in an Apple-compatible version. Although there are some emulators available for Apples that sometimes work, for some programs, on some days, we have not found one that is reliable enough for engineering work, especially since engineers tend to use some of those obscure mathematical functions that are often not included on the emulators. The only way we have found that is completely reliable is to be able to load a copy of the Microsoft Windows Operating System on the Apple and then booting into Windows when you need to use that software. This also requires an Apple computer capable of running Windows (which is most of the Apple produced in the last several years). However, to do this you must purchase a copy of the Windows OS and load onto your Apple computer. So, the main reason we do not recommend an Apple computer is because of the additional costs of having to run Windows on the Apple machine. That will generally require a larger hard drive and the purchase of the Windows operating system. That said, some of our students do use Apple computers in their coursework and get along well. However, mileage varies by individual. Not being able to run required software because you have an Apple computer is not an excuse to not do assignments. Nor is it reason for special consideration to be given to you. The purpose of requiring computers is so that our students can use the software needed in their disciplines. If you choose to purchase an Apple computer, keep these things in mind. And should you choose to use an Apple computer, remember to get your educational discount.
