Year 8: Understanding the internet

Computer Communications and Networking

Using thecomputing.zone and your research skills, fill in this sheet to explain what a network is, how they work and why we use them.

What is a network? (Click here for more info…)

A stand-alone computer is a computer which is not connected to another. This was quite normal when there were fewer computers than there are today. Computers had data input to them and would give back processed information to the user. It became clear that data processing could be far more efficient if computers were linked together.

We have learned that the internet is a series of (inter)connected (net)works – but, in the most basic way possible, what is a network? Type your answer in the box below.

Most networks will have a server. What is a server and why are they useful to have as a part of a network?

Types of Network (Click here for more info…)

There are 2 main types of networks which you will commonly encounter, LAN and WAN. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. It is important that you know the differences between the two.

Type # 1 - LAN

What does the term LAN stand for?

Explain, in your own words, what a LAN is and where you might expect to find one.

What are the possible disadvantages of using a LAN? (Think about cost and responsibility)

Type # 2 - WAN

What does the term WAN stand for?

Explain, in your own words, what a WAN is and examples of WANS in use all around you.

What are some of the advantages of using a WAN instead of a LAN?
