Connecting a device to the HutchinsOpen Wireless Network




Introduction


The HutchinsOpen wireless network is a network that has been specifically set up to avoid the problems encountered with certificate based authentication in the past.

This network allows the easy connection of all types of devices.

It is restricted to Internet (external) only traffic on standard internet ports only. All internal network, with the exception of printers, is not permitted.

  1. To connect an Android device, open the wireless settings page

  1. Select the HutchinsOpen network

  1. Enter your username in the Identity field in exactly the format hutchins\username where username is your username for logging onto Hutchins computers

  2. Leave Anonymous identity blank

  3. Enter your Hutchins network password in the Password field and click Connect

You will know that you are connected by the two options above




Connecting an iPhone / iPod / iPad device


The layout varies between devices and is dependent on the version of the operating system. However the basics are the same

  1. To connect an iOS device select the settings page, then click Wi-Fi

  1. Select the HutchinsOpen network

  1. Enter your username in the Username field in exactly the format hutchins\username where username is your username for logging onto Hutchins computers

  2. Enter your Hutchins network password in the Password field and click Join

  1. Accept the Authentication certificate

You will know you are connected by the tick next to the HutchinsOpen network


Connecting Windows XP


Windows XP requires a minimum of Service Pack 3 to connect to the HutchinsOpen network

  1. From the start menu select Connect To then Wireless Network Connection

  1. Choose Change advanced settings

  1. Choose the Wireless Networks tab and select Add

  1. Complete the form exactly as above
    Network Name: HutchinsOpen
    Network Authentication: WPA2
    Data Encryption: TKIP

  1. Switch to the Authentication tab.

    1. Set the EAP type to Protected EAP

    2. Remove the check from Authenticate as computer

    3. Select the Properties Button

  1. Set the EAP properties exactly as above

    1. Remove the check of Validate server certificate

    2. Remove the check off Enable Fast Reconnect

    3. Select the Configure button

  1. Remove the check from Automatically use….

  2. Click OK until all windows are closed

  1. Enter your Hutchins network credentials and click OK

You will know you are connected when the balloon opens.


Connecting Windows 7

  1. Choose Start then Control Panel. Select Network and Internet followed by View network status and tasks

  1. Click the Set up a new connection or network option

  1. Select the Manually connect to a wireless network option and click Next

  1. Set up the network exactly as above

    1. Network Name: HutchinsOpen

    2. Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise

    3. Encryption Type: TKIP

  2. Click Next

  1. Click Change connection settings

  1. Switch to the Security tab and click the Settings button

  1. Set the EAP properties exactly as above

    1. Remove tick off Validate server certificate

    2. Remove tick off Enable fast reconnect

    3. Click the Configure button

  1. Remove the tick off Automatically use…

  2. Click OK until all windows close

  2. Enter your Hutchins network password in the Password field and click OK

You will know you have a successful connection by the Connected label against the network


Connecting an OS X Mac


It is anticipated that OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Lion will have the same steps

  1. Open System Preferences and select the Network option

  1. Select AirPort and then the HutchinsOpen network from the Network Name drop down list

  1. Enter your username in the Username field in exactly the format hutchins\username where username is your username for logging onto Hutchins computers

  2. Enter your Hutchins network password in the Password field and click OK

You will know you are successfully connected by the connection tag against the AirPort icon



Netbox Certificate


In all operating systems other than Android you will also need to add the Netbox proxy certificate so that you can go to secure sites without a warning. The certificate can be accessed from http://hutchins.safenetbox.biz/noauth/cacert. Open the certificate in install in the relevant key store.
