Music Theory 2014-2015

7th Period

Instructor: Mr. Joshua Lott, I126

Email: jlott@sisd.net

Conference Period – 8th
Welcome to Music Theory! This course is designed to give the students the necessary skills to excel as a college freshman. This class is very different from all other classes in the music department in that it is not a performance-based class, but is a discipline-based study. The majority of the course will be centered on music theory but will also include a unit on piano and aural skills. You will learn about the theoretical foundations that make up music, sight singing, ear training, and basic piano skills. It is a highly focused course of study that will require you to think rationally, clearly, and in an organized fashion. The goal of this course is to get you through your first two semesters of Music Theory in college as well 1st semester of ear training.
Pre-requisite:

  • Student needs to be currently enrolled in Band, Choir, Orchestra, or guitar 2-4

Required Materials:

  • Pencil (not pen) to complete assignments

  • 1 Three Ring Binder

Grades:

  • Daily Grades (50%) - Homework, classwork, Ear Training evaluations, and quizzes

  • Test Grades (30%) – Tests and Projects

  • 9 weeks test (20%) – 70% - Written, 30% Aural/Sight Singing Test

Confused?

What happens when you get confused and lost? This is normal in Music Theory. You will be lost at times as we move quickly through the material. Do NOT be afraid to ask for help as we move through concepts. Please visit me during my conference period if available or any time I am not rehearsing for assistance.

Classroom Expectations:

The student is expected to stay on task and complete the work assigned to him or her during class time. If the student is assigned homework, he or she is expected to complete the assignment in a timely manner by the due date. Because students in music are only allowed to have homework on Fridays, there will be a hefty amount of work given. This homework will be due the following Monday unless otherwise stated. The student is expected to come to class prepared and ready to work by the time the bell rings with a pencil and their binder daily.
