Introduction/Context

This lesson will instruct the student on how to select and price aftermarket parts, verify availability, compatibility, and condition, and select and price aftermarket parts; verify availability, compatibility, and condition. Knowledge of these techniques and the skills required to correct problems associated with this task are necessary for a student to acquire if they wish to compete for high paying, high skilled jobs in a Collision Repair Facility. Entry level technicians need to be able to perform this task to 100% accuracy. Incorrectly performing this task can lead to an automobile accident or create customer satisfaction issues.

Instruct students that non-OEM parts are also known as aftermarket parts. Let them know that aftermarket parts are usually the commonly damaged parts such as fenders, bumpers, hoods, and lights. Inform them that there are an ever-increasing number of aftermarket parts available.

Tell students that prices and part numbers are listed in catalogs supplied by the jobbers or mail-order warehouses. Even though a part number is listed, the part may not be available. Inform them that they should call the supplier to verify if the part is actually available. Let them know that aftermarket parts usually cost less than OEM parts. If aftermarket parts are included in the estimate, explain that they should be CAPA certified.

Inform students that the Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) is a non-profit organization that certifies the quality of automotive parts used for collision repairs. CAPA oversees a testing and inspection program that certifies the quality of automotive parts used for collision repairs. Tell them that CAPA ensures that parts meet quality standards for fit, component materials, and corrosion resistance.

Instruct students that since the CAPA is not a manufacturing, marketing, or sales organization, it provides consumers, auto body shops, part distributors, and insurance adjusters with an objective method for evaluating the quality of certified parts and their functional equivalency to similar parts manufactured by automotive companies. Explain that CAPA was founded to promote price and quality competition in the collision part industry, thereby reducing the cost of crash repairs to consumers without sacrificing quality.
