BASINGSTOKE BRIDGE CLUB NEWSLETTER

Issue 279 April 2017

County success

It was great to see two Basingstoke teams in the final of the HICKO (county handicapped knock-out for teams of four.).Congratulations to Andy Fry, Phil Brown, Keith Bennett and John Fairhurst who beat the team of Andrew & Mary Ferguson, John Glasscock & Sam Golding by 29 after application of the handicap. There is a photo on our website and one on the HIWCBA website.

Many congratulations also to Mike Nunn & Gary Stevens who won the Bourne BP Swiss Pairs. They were second in this tournament last year.
Basingstoke pairs who qualified for the Pottage final were Chris Kinloch & Iain Climie and Viv Morris & Jane Rutherford. My partner and I were first reserves and we have now scraped in by default.
Club success

Congratulations to Monica Wade & Arthur Whittaker who finished in 7th place on the ECats leader board to win our Whitbread trophy for the highest scoring pair on the ECats ranking list.

To see your individual score compared to those of all the other players country wide, go to http://www.simpairs.com/ranking.asp?session=003776&ClubID=Overall

You can then click on club to see the Basingstoke ranking list and how everyone scored overall.

As there were 12 tables we raised £144.00 for Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research.
Supervised Play

We have now had 4 very successful supervised play sessions. Chris Ray’s next two will be 7th April: “Overcalling after opponents open 1NT” and 21st April: “How accurate are your rebids? Reversing” Then on 5th May Chris Kinloch will tackle “Covering honours with honours”. If you wish to attend any or all of these please contact Chris Ray: cr3r3r@gmail.co (telephone 02380 253239) or Chris Kinloch:  kinloch@btinternet.com (telephone 01264 333175) or so that they can have an idea of how many to expect.

Watch the website calendar and club notice board for further details of topics and dates.

Parking

Just a reminder that we can no longer use the nursery car park in the evening, and also nursery staff can no longer use our car park during the day. This is because there is more and more bridge during the week and we really need all the space we have when special events are on. Please note the parking restrictions on Richmond Road which we have checked with Basingstoke Council: maximum two hours in the afternoons and all evening after 7.00 pm. There is also 4 hours parking during the day in Burgess Road (two roads down from Richmond Road), so this may be helpful to members on Wednesday afternoons.

Looking after our playing cards

I’m sorry to have to mention this again, but some people are still inclined to bend the cards. Please gently remind any offenders that they should try not to do this. It really does mean the cards can get stuck in the dealing machine. At the same time I should point out that the dealing machine sometimes stops when it can’t recognise a card: this usually means the cards have been boxed (i.e. some are facing the wrong way). Sometimes it stops because it discovers a duplicate card, e.g. there are two jacks of clubs in the same pack. We often have to try to find where these duplicate cards should be, and this can be time consuming. Please when you strip the boards make sure that the packs are kept separate with all cards facing the same direction.

April events
Teams of four will be on Monday 3rd April
The next round of the Tuesday League is Tuesday 4th April. Andy Fry’s team have edged into the lead just above Richard Ray’s in Division 1 and John Glasscock’s team is slightly ahead of Viv Morris’s in Division 2. Can they retain their leading positions?
The fifth round of the Six Partners is Monday 24th April. Remember there are a total of 12 rounds and you only need to have played with six different partners to qualify. So, even if you missed the first four rounds, there is still plenty of time to participate.
The Bayer No Fear Pairs will be played at Basingstoke on Thursday 27th April. This event is open to all players below the rank of Regional Master and is not restricted to EBU members. It is played simultaneously in several other Hampshire Clubs during that week. If you are eligible, but do not usually attend on a Thursday, please enter on the notice board or let George know if you wish to play.
The Tessa Henshaw Ladies Individual will take place on Saturday 29th April. This is an all play all, all partner all competition. There will be a 2.00 pm start and a break for the usual delicious tea. We should be finished by 7.00 pm. Please enter on the club notice board or let me know you are definitely playing in this, as we need to know numbers.
Committee meeting

The next committee meeting is on Friday 7th April before the bridge session. If you have anything you would particularly like the committee to discuss please contact me or any other committee member.

Bridge among the Daffodils (With apologies to W. Wordsworth)

I play my aces, and I’m proud

To take my tricks: it gives me thrills

To know that I have been allowed

To win, and winning always kills

Some paltry twos or measly threes.

It’s fun! I do it with such ease!
Continuous are the hands of mine

That give me joy from day to day.

I play my aces and it’s fine:

I get my kicks the easy way.

Quick tricks I notice at a glance:

I always leap at every chance.

I set up others’ kings, but they And oft when on my couch I lie

Are all irrelevant to me. In vacant or in pensive mood,

I always know that I should play Some hands flash on my inward eye.

My aces which will winners be! I try to play them as I should.

I play all day without a thought. But then my heart with pleasure fills,

I really couldn’t care a jot! And I play aces, just for thrills!

I wish all our members a happy and peaceful Easter.

Helen
